Here is a 51 vintage Griswold that I am rehabbing. Something baked on the outside that Easy Off blue top or 450° baking on the grill won't touch.

I treasure my grandmother's Griswold, but need to build an electrolysis unit to give it a deep clean. Pretty simple to do.

Run it thru an oven clean cycle. That's much hotter than 450.

Mine was really bad with rust and stains. I put it in the oven on the cleaning mode. Gets much hotter. When I was done all the crud and rust was on the bottom of the stove. It came out like it was brand new and all I had to do was season it.

That stuff on the outside came from the inside, cast is porous enough that oils and lard seep out and are charred on the outside. My sister has cast cookware that has been in our family since early 1800’s and came to the Indian territory on the trail of tears with our g,g,g,g grand parents.

Nice pan i have about ten of them, do a you tube search on cleaning cast iron pans. 8)

My Grandmother on my Dad's side used to cook with cast iron. When she died, one Aunt got most of it. It is probably rusted to a pile of junk by now. That Grandmother was born in 1895. We covered 115 years by the time my daughter was born.

Using your oven's cleaning cycle can indeed clean your cast iron. But it can (not will, just can) also warp or crack it. Getting over seven to eight hundred degrees is something that iron/steel really start to notice structurally. Some ovens go to 900+.


I use a lye bath to clean mine. I love my cast iron.

As far as I'm concerned, plain hot water and a swish with a plastic mesh scrubber or a wok brush is all the cleaning cast iron or pressed steel ever needs.

I have a pan i screwed up with soup and taters. Warmed up water in to get rid of dried on crusty stuff. Wiped as clean as possibe, set it back on medium heat sprayed a couple shots of Pam. Waited til it just started to steam, swished it around and dumped it out. Wiped lightly with a paper towel and voila! it was clean and "purty" again. Todd/3leg
