A dozen buzzards eating catfish heads

Post by crs »

Nature in the raw!

The county road to town leads past our north pasture fence and since before we bought the property, a local fisherman began dumping his catfish cleaning leftovers on the roadside just out of view from our house. After a lull caused by very rainy weather, he is at it again. As I drove into town yesterday morning, I flushed a dozen buzzards from the roadside and curious to see why they were on the road, I slowed down and saw the remains of a good nights catfishing on the shoulder.

When I returned an hour later, all the fish heads were gone and the sun was drying out the last bit of evidence of a big catch.

As long as the buzzards are cleaning up his mess, I guess no harm done. Buzzards have to eat too!

I was expecting a picture of the local Rotary Club down at the local catfish restaurant....

Simple enough to put up a game camera to capture the culprit and his license plate. I don't know about your state, but in mine a small fee will get you the name and address of the registered owner. Then just return the catfish remains to his lawn. I imagine his neighbors might be a bit upset with the smell.

I don't see any harm. Is the dumping area on your property? Or on the road? You mentioned it is out of sight. Is there any lasting mess? The main thing is; does it bother you?

Over a 14 hour period last weekend I watched a flock of vultures pick a 150# road kill deer so clean the neighbor’s dog turned its nose up at the skeleton and walked away. They started at the nose and tail. The flattened grass under the skeleton was clean. Amazing creatures.
Kind regards,

mikld,
It is usually on the shoulder of the county road and only rarely on the turn into our north pasture gate which is rarely used. Mostly a curiosity to me.
It bothers me only in the fact that he is transferring his problem and responsibility to me and to the county.
He is a very minor irritant compared to other people that litter our side of that road with beer and wine bottles, fast food trash, old TV sets, occasional old chairs and couches and cats and dogs they dump. Their litter increases at month end when the rent is due and they move.
Just this week some cats were dumped and have been running the property and even our yard and on my Tahoe one night. They usually last only a few days because of the coyotes and red tailed hawks.
The town has a periodic cat round up because the problem is so bad.
Today it was two young men on an ATV playing loud music and drinking beer; guess where the beer cans will be thrown?
mmm- maybe I should encourage the city to have an occasional round up of juvenile delinquents?

Sounds like all the other issues you listed are much higher on the priority list than some catfish heads the buzzards cleaned up. If you can get the buzzards to pick up beer bottles, trash, and attack ATV's with loud radios, then all your problems are solved!

There's a local lady that like to feed the sea gulls in our area. The entire "meal" only lasts less than an hour, and while irritating to some, it's really no big deal. Personally I wouldn't bother with the "buzzard feeder" and perhaps take action against the litterers. We have a problem of that sorts here. Woods/forest down to city limits and trash and junk tossed along the roads upriver and in the forest. The county "doesn't have the manpower" so there's a group of dedicated individuals that do an excellent job of cleaning up our country roads; they call themselves "The Trash Dogs".

Maybe your son can rig up an EMP device that would fry the electronics of anything within 30 feet when it goes off. That would slow them down. Besides, who are the juveniles going to complain to?
