Plated Bullets vs. Cast Bullets

Post by JimT »

The talk about Berry's plated bullets gave me an idea ....

Lee 225 gr. RN .45 ACP cast ... alloy 10 BHN and a Berry's 230 gr. plated .45 ACP

Placed nose to nose in a vise, the tougher bullet will penetrate the lesser.

I then took a cast bullet and the plated bullet, set them on the vise and whacked them with a 4 pound hammer. I tried to do it the same each time but you know that is very subjective. Still it is interesting.

What did this prove? Not much. The plated bullets are obviously tough. So are the cast bullets. You would have to drive them faster than you can safely from a 1911 to get either one to expand much ... even against concrete.

Measure them around now.

This is how I bump-up undersized minie balls. Foreshortening flattens them and gently tapping around the skirt while rotating swages them down.

A 230 to 260 gr. bullet for your 45-70 is just smack of a hammer from a .452"

The resultant hollowpoint you made reminded me of Paco's Acu'Rzr tool.... 8)

I like my home cast bullets lubrisized and checked in handguns and levers . Not much on the plated ones or powder coated . Just my personal opinion .
