The Powder Gods

Post by 6pt-sika »

I had a fellow just sell me some powder at a greatly reduced price !

I got an unopened 8 pounder of VV N-160 , an unopened 8 pounder of IMR-4350 , an unopened 8 pounder of IMR-8208 and about 6 pounds of Promo in an 8 pound container .

And it averaged out to about $13 a pound .

While I’ve not tried VV N-160 in anything before it appears it oughtta do pretty well in my 6.5-06 and 270 . And based on the loads for the 270 WSM it looks like it oughtta work pretty well in the 6.5 Sherman Short I am strongly thinking about building .

Yes from what I gather they took a 270 WSM changed the body angle and shoulder a bit . I’ve used VV powders for about ten years now just not N-160 . I used N-110 in the Savage ML I used to have and have used N-120 and N-130 with 444 cast loads . N-120 does very well in the 222 also .

I need to investigate a bit more and see what the difference is between the Sherman and the PRC as far as working in a short action 700 . Dies and components for the PRC are a good bit less costly .

Wow, talk about no body taper! Looks like it is quite efficient, good velocity with heavier end bullets.

Wherever I got that it was based on the 270 WSM that was WRONG ! I talked with the guy that came up with it and he said it was based on the SAUM case .

Reading from the link you provided it looks like you can use either with a preference on the WSM because of head size.

Well I have a donor stainless 700 on the way as well as a brand spanking new Shilen #3 1:8 . Have s line on 100 pieces of brass with the correct headstanp . So all I need to do is order a set of proprietary dies and rent the creamer and gauges . Thru trading today I came into a Winchester Model 70 stainless claw feed in 243 WSSM that one may very well turn into a 6.5mm-243WSSM .
