Need to rout bronze help

Post by Tycer »

I have a windshield support for a boat that is chromed brass or bronze. I’m not installing it on the boat it was designed for any angle is a little bit off and I need to remove some metal from the channel that the glass slides into. I’m thinking a 3/16 inch carbide burr is the proper tool as the groove is about 3/8 of an inch and I just need to remove some material from the backside of the channel on one side. I have both deemed and pneumatic tools.

sounds like it would work, with a steady hand.

what about a file? they make mistakes slowly, with a safe edge you can protect the metal you want to keep.

Only way to remove metal with a router is to have a good guide that will follow the channel you want to do. Without a guide it will end up a huge mess trying to freehand it.

So I’m thinking a quarter inch shaft 3/16 double cut carbide burr. I can use the quarter inch shaft as a bearing face for a wooden guide clamped to the part.
Sa14 burr

Tycer, I've gone to the Lake Winnipesaukee's vintage in-water Antique Boat Show in Wolfeboro NH and to the NH Boat Museum, and it seems to me there's a core group of guys who love the old lapstrake boats and will go out of their way to help each other restore them -- some even found a way to do it for a living. I think there's a core group out in the Michigan area for the Great Lakes too. And I'll bet there are others around the other lake regions too. You might be able to call a shop or two and ask the experts who may have done it before.

Just like we're here for Leverguns (well, maybe for 15% of the time now...) I am sure there's a wooden boat restoration, lapstrake boats, Lyman boats or Hacker-Craft web forum you could find where you could ask the question too.

As a life-long boater -- who grew up on wooden boats -- I'm thrilled to see you working on the 'ol girl! Post some more pictures about the peoject when you can.

Who knows... You might just inspire Pitchy to build one!

I used a reinforced cutoff wheel with a dremel. Worked a treat. I spoke to a tool and die gal who said bronze generally won’t gall like aluminum. Took 20 minutes.

Very cool, then you know who can help.

I don't belong to ACBS but my AOMCI (Antique Outboards) chapter gets invited to and participates in local ACBS events.
