Colt SAA in a shoulder holster?

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Wondering who here has carried a Colt this way? Did you ever try carrying concealed in a shoulder rig?
Curious, as great-grandfather supposedly considered a Colt in a shoulder rig as essential as underwear ...

Back in the days when I wore a suit I carried a single action in a shoulder holster. Found it very comfortable, easy to reach when needed .. and less trouble than a belt rig when I had to sit on the toilet ...

When I had my SBH I had a shoulder rig for it. 7&1/2 is a bit long but it carried well in the field.

I've carried mine in a shoulder rig, but not concealed. I carried it that way when hunting to protect it from banging on my rifle. A hip holster really gets in the way of carrying a rifle over your shoulder, and beats upyour stock, or the handgun. A shoulder holster also keeps the handgun out of the weather if it gets ugly out.

Me too. I have a Bianchi rig that I bought back in the 80's and still use it for hunting. I carry the 6" .41 nowdays tho I used it for the 71/2" 454 and the 8" 45 Ruger.

I carry my 5.5" AWA SAA in .45 Colt as my backup. It's light enough to not be uncomfortable in a shoulder holster, and enough stopping power if I encounter a cougar or bear while deer or elk hunting.

Had this speed clip style made several years ago.

Don't use it much. The only time is when I know I'll have a coat on. To stay in the coat though, it's gotta be pretty cold .

I have a simply rugged chest holster works very well, it can carry 4 5/8 SA ruger, 4in model 28 or 6 in model 28. Just had to add another snap on the strap for the smiths. Much easier to handle hounds. Weight on hip made my back sore after while, and always hung on brush.

Not a Colt but I do carry a Colt replica at times. Specifically a 3” barreled 1860. It carries very well in a custom made rig. Hey that gun and being a southpaw made custom the only way to go.

Obviously I don’t carry a reload. But I usually have a more modern backup.

Back in the 1970's when I was in pharmacy school, I had to work part time - usually in pharmacies in dangerous neighborhoods during the evening or night shifts. The only two handguns I had where are Ruger Mark 1 semiauto pistol in 22 LR and a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Magnum...

......choices, choices..... :D

So..... I purchased a Bianchi X-15 shoulder rig, and wore that under my cute little white coat I had to wear as a pharmacy intern.

What made that especially interesting was the fact that at that time, Ohio did not allow concealed carry at all, even though it was legal and within the intent of the law. What had happened was over time the idea that one should not need a permit to carry, but just simply not have any of the characteristics that should prohibit it, such as being a felon, intoxicated, juvenile, acting recklessly, or committing a crime, had morphed into the idea that if you carry concealed you would get arrested and have to 'prove' that you weren't doing anything bad. Guilty until proven innocent. I'm sure that had I been caught carrying concealed there I would have gotten in quite a bit of trouble, probably thrown out of school and in to jail. If I were in a similar situation now, I would definitely carry a much more concealable firearm, but that's all I had in those days...!
