Lighter loads for .41 magnum in the Marlin 1894S?

Post by WickedWillie »

Does anyone have any favorites? Looking for loads in the 800-900 fps range, up to 1100 maximum. Bullet weight 215-200 grains.

Hi Willie, welcome to the stump.

I don't have one of those 41 mags but would be real tempted to acquire one if it came along.

Any of the fast pistol powders would do the job for you; I have a mild bias toward powders that fill the case more than half full so that a double charge would be real obvious. With that consideration, loads you are talking would be ideal Trailboss loads I would think. Hodgden shows 4.5 to 6.5 grains of Trailboss being right in your velocity range, allowing for the lower velocity of their 10" test barrel (probably 50 to 60 fps according to my QuickLoad software).

I just came in from the loading bench where I was using 7.5 grains of Trailboss to make a mild 44 mag load for my Rossi.

Hi Willie, I am using 6.0 grs of American Select for my light load with a 210 gr bullet. Have not chronographed it but it is likely in your desired range. I have liked this powder in other cartridges, burns very clean.

I've always liked 7.0 gr. of 231 pushing a 215 gr. lswc - but that's in revolvers.

Somewhere around 1,000 - 1100 fps.

I agree.....7 grains of 231 behind the standard bullet weight is used in my 44 Spl's, magnums, 38-40, 44-40' 45 Long Colt.....revolvers and rifles for play and competition........it's just a very nice pleasant load to shoot all day...easy on the gun, brass, and you.-------6

I love shotgun powders in a fair number of pistol cartridges. My favorite is a 210 gr. bullet with 6.0 grs. of Red Dot for just under 1,000 fps. Mild, and extremely accurate too. Might be slightly over 1,000 fps in a longer barrel.
