300BO brass made easy

Post by OldWin »

There are quite a few cartridges that fit in an AR15 these days. While it can certainly be argued that some have superior ballistics to 300BO, none of them are an easier change.
One of the things that drew me to it is that it needs no support from the factory. No shortage of .30cal bullets, and the brass is easily made from the 5.56/.223 parent case. Been doing some online searching and I liked this method. There was little cost while providing a speedy process.
This little 2" cutoff saw is available at Harbor Freight for 34 bucks. There is a little clamp assembly that comes off with 2 screws.
Then I got this slick little cutting jig. It uses the screw holes in the saw plate to attach. The .223 case is pushed in from the left until a ball detent locks in the extractor groove. When the location of the jig is adjusted, this gives a consistent cut off length. When you push in the next case, it pops the cut one out the right side. I set mine a few thousanth's long so I can trim and square in my Lyman case trimmer.
Since the body is so close to final neck size, it's just a matter of running the cut case through a 300BO sizing die to form the case.
Then I use my Dillon primer pocket swage to remove the crimp from my Lake City brass.
There you go! Cheap and easy 300BO.

Great system, OldWin. Case forming and trimming are my two least favorite parts of reloading.

Lucky guy you! All you rich folk in Maine get to afford those fancy cut off tools and fixtures. Us poor hicks here Pa have to drill 30 holes in a piec of oak and run em through a band saw. Then to one of those Forster trimmers designed for a drill press.(I use a different blade than the one pictured.....can also use a thin cut off wheel on a 1/4 horse motor.

I don't even own a BO. Was bored one day in anticipation of a future buy...

You get aaaaaaallllllll of the neat stuff!----6

What does "BO" stand for....Barack Obama or body odor?

Thanks guys!

HA! I knew the usual hackin' from Ole Six was comin'! :D
Now that's just fine, my skin is pretty thick.
But OBAMA? Now THAT'S pretty low, man. :D
That engraved 92 carbine should make me feel better. :D
You have my address.......right buddy?

Gunny! My man! You, sir, are the hero of the week. That BO, in 300BO, always bothered me.
And yes, I much preferred body odor to obama.
Thank you SO much for fixing that for me!
Now THAT is a freind, right there! :D

Maybe I will send out my receiver and get that engraved on it. :D
And hey, now we know why it's such a popular hog cartridge. :D

I think of Trump more along the lines of 458 Punch Out

it's his haters that are small caliber

Hey Six that is how my mind works normally! Seems like I've always got a quick smart alec or humorous remark. It could also stand for B!tch Out- as in The 300 Trump kept the B!tch Out.

Sure thing OW, that's what I'm here for, moral support. BTW, I finally cracked open the syrup- mmmmm good!

Yeah but I think of the haters more like Ackley's .14 stuff, just a foot note in history.

My 300 BO brass is even cheaper because a fellow gave me a couple gallon box of fired 5.56mm blanks to make into 300 BO brass.
I haven't blowed myself up yet, so don't tell me military blanks aren't safe to use for live ammo.
Also, when I bought the Harbor Fright cut-off, I got the next size larger figgerin' that it would be more useful around the shop when it wasn't cutting cases.

Glad you like it Gunny!

Jack,
I thought of the bigger saw too, but wasn't sure the cutting jig would fit.

Hey Jay....are those Harbor Freight cut off tools any good...as to strength? Nothing annoys me more than having to "ease through" what I'm cutting. I have a ten cent band saw in the gunroom that's about good enough for cutting through toothpicks....whenever a job calls for power I have to hustle the part out to the garage for the mighty extra strong Grizzly.

Thinking about taking a drive down to the HF store in Delaware to dump a few hundred on fun tools.
