Over heard at hardware store ......

Post by wm »

Older gentlemen who seemed to be there with his teen age grandson who was looking at a kit you assemble to create a work bench out of 2X4"s.

"If you need a kit and directions to build a work bench, then you have no business needing a work bench."

I stopped, locked eyes with the old gent, smiled and gave him a thumbs up.

Well, ya have to start someplace....Perhaps the "old Gent" has been shirking his duties if his grandson didn't know how to use tools.

A supervised project to build a work bench is a good place to start.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

let's not be too quick to judge Grandpa - there are many reasons that may have prevented his passing along the knowledge,

perhaps the grandsons family lived far away, and the opportunity wasn't there until they moved back - or grandson was spending the summer.

perhaps Dad wouldn't allow it, because the grandson was a total klutz and he didn't want to see any finger removed.....

I'm sure you can think of more, if you try

Hate to inform you guys but there are people......MANY of them...who don't even own a screwdriver....my brother owns a few hardware stores and he sees this regularly.....people will come in and ask to buy "2 nails" and then ask, "how do I get these nails where I want them?"

Most all of these people are college educated white people.

Fordwannabe and myself were bs last night and there are people who actually pay mechanics $4-800 to put brakes on their cars!

When I was a youngster, we had NO CHOICE but to learn to do things ourselves...it was hard enough to pay for the parts. There's not much I can't fix myself...like the computers on cars, etc...---6

Maybe the kid was a computer whiz and just wanted a bench to store his computer components. Not every bench is used for engine rebuilding or reloading, and not every kid can remove a screw without reciting "lefty loosy, righty tighty)...

When I was the yard foreman at the lumberyard customers would come in and ask to something cut to size. Sure no problem, here is a tape measure and a pencil. You measure & mark it and I'll cut it. They cant tell betw8a quarter and a half, eighth or sixteenths forget about it - their heads would explode!
When the boss would hire a new kid to work the yard I'd have to spend hours teaching a them how to read a ruler. Sometimes they just couldn't understand it...

Dad loved carpentry and did his best to get my middle brother and I involved. From our point of view there wasn't any woodworking in cars or motorcycles so it wasn't of interest. Later when we both owned houses we came to regret our choices. Of course Dad was a fair mechanic but when Mom's car needed a timing belt or his bug needed the carb rebuilt we got the call. I do better than my bro at finish carpentry but a real finish guy would probably giggle at my efforts. As Clint said, "a man's got to know his limitations."
