Trail Boss, 44-40 and 265 Yards

Post by Bryan Austin »

Certainly nothing new here other than hitting a 265 yard target with 200gr LRNFP bullets and a whopping 6.4gr of TB.
I did not properly edit the video and I missed a few things like spelling Warrior wrong and a few other things but......I shoot the way I record and edit video clips as well as post on forums...lol!!! Many skills I do lack!

According to my data 6.4gr @ 7,224psi. The velocity was recorded from a rifle back in 2012 which I think was 900fps while the psi is recent and from a custom 20" MGM barrel I use for testing pressures with a Pressurtrace II strain gauge system. I do need to update the velocity from a rifle.

A case capacity full to where the bullet sits firmly on top of the powder was 9.4gr. This load gave me 1,250fps @ 15,182psi...4,000psi above SAAMI MAP of 11,000psi

The below video shows a few shots at 265 yards starting at the 4:22 minute mark. Using Buckhorn sites (Uberti 73') , the tips of the Buckhorns was even with the base of the front site making for a horrendous bullet drop. The Marlin 1894CB shots at the beginning of the video also used open sights but used the flip-up Ladder site on the second notch. Also used in the Marlin were High Velocity loads, 25gr of IMR-4227 producing 1,650fps @ 18,000psi (approx. 22,000cup) replicating Winchester's 1903-1945 High Velocity loads. Originally Winchester used 19gr of Sharpshooter, back in the day, and produced 1,600fps with a 200gr bullet purposefully designed for the Winchester model 92' - https://curtisshawk21.wixsite.com/44cen ... ss-powders

Nice work, Jack. That old .44-40 deserves respect all these years later.

Now THIS is what this form is really about, at its core....

Thanks for posting, and doing all that work and sharing with us.

Obviously, we all share a lot of other interests and different types of firearms and hunting and fishing and welding and boats and tractors and dogs and gardening and families and pretty girls and all sorts of other guy stuff, which I am really glad get posted here, but it is nice to circle back to the topic of lever action firearms and what can be done with them.

The 44-40 is a great cartridge to experiment and play with...I like the 1894 Marlin the best, maybe because mine has a perfect bore.

Nice post AND a good reminder to dig in the old powders. Thank you...great info....In the first web link, a lot of the info was given by John Kort, a good friend of mine and member here on leverguns. Before he passed he gave me his old powder collection. Many of those pictures of old powder cans in the link are here, waiting to be used.--6

Past 30 years at the range, similar target at 400 yds on a mountain. People shoot at it and hit it with everything out there. There was a little lady with a Model 70.308 shooting off a bench that would hit it until you were tired of watching. Bullet has to land somewhere.

Nothing much more fun than shooting small cartridges at distances we normally think they can't make hits!

Even the .32-20 can make it! This gal had never fired anything but a .22 rifle before this! She and her husband stopped to deliver eggs during a shoot, and she got sat down behind an 1894 Marlin in .32-20.And notice she's doing it with standard barrel sights too!

Sixgun, that is great that you have those. Correct, 95% of my information is due to John. He gave me written permission to use everything he had on line. I have most his writings and photos saved.

Oh man...thanks for those links! I never knew they existed. Tomorrow, I ain't doing nuttin'! Except reading those links. Last night, after your reminder I went downstairs and dug out all that powder. Some of it was only made for a few years...from 1896-1902! Yea, I have this stuff..exciting for a peon like me.

Jack Kort was one of the finest, if not the finest human being I have ever known. Very generous and extremely religious....while riding in a car with him he had tapes all about Christianity which he played real loud...we could not talk it was so loud...but that's ok, just being with him was a world experience in itself.

That is bud---6. (Also a Jack :D )

Sixgun, I can add you to the webpage as a contributor and you can post blogs on the old blog page. I actually now have a new blog page option started (old bog still available) and it is more user friendly and folks can post comments
I think maybe anyone can post a blog but I have yet time to mess with it. Check it out: https://curtisshawk21.wixsite.com/44centerfire/blog-1
