Thanks …… I work 3rd shift and depression has occasionally been an issue with me. As a union steward I often find that employees who are struggling are likewise showing signs of depression. This link will be useful.

Thank you,

Wm

Outdoor activity and sunshine do wonders for me.
Early morning storms have passed and left me plenty of downed branches and trees to clean up , so :D

In some places the straight line wind was measured at 100 mph and so there was some wind damage in the greater DFW area.

Good news for sufferers. :)
I am fortunately immune to depression, as in the UK it can bar you from owning firearms, so I always smile at my doctor no matter how bad the news is.... :wink

No depression here, but I sure can tell after a long winter how much better I feel when the sun comes out and things warm up here!

About a third of the U.S. population has a 'mutation' of the MTHFR (methyltetrahydrofolate reductase) gene, and of that bunch, I find about a third of them responds to a simple regimen of "B-complex" that is specifically tailored to THEIR genetics (i.e. regular vitamins won't work because they don't metabolize them properly).

Thorne's MethylGuard Plus is the product we use. Regular dose is 3 daily, and that runs about $48/month, but even one daily ($16/month) works for some.

Most doctors won't mess with it though, because all they think about is whatever big-pharma makes, and the FDA endorses - which limits the treatment options to stuff that is synthetic, and thus patentable, so the maker can recoup the $100 million or so that it takes to prove to the FDA that anything is 'safe and effective'.

The VA had me on Prozac for years, and I thought I needed it. Thought. After doing some research it seems that taking antidepressants when you don't need them gives you depression. Go figger.
Anyway, I tapered off for a week and then put them aside. I kept a weather eye on myself and after a few days of jitters the chemical was out of my system and I felt much better. Certainly no worse than when I was on the med.
YMMV, but the "doctors" at VA never met a pill they didn't like and if you ask their permission they won't condone their discontinuance.

I am not a fan of antidepressants. They never seem to work. Just my observances, but I might be missing some cases where they do work.

Tycer, that's interesting. A friend with chronic depression who has been on SSRIs for years studied microdosing with psilocybin and reports fantastic personal results. I am reluctant to try anything that has not been evaluated in proper clinical trials.

Excellent link Tycer.
Here is another, but I am not prepared to go down this road at this time due to both legal and scientific concerns. I do think will hear and learn much more about these compounds in the near future.

St John's Wort has been proven pretty much safe and has had good results for hundreds of years. CBD Oil is also haveing good results.

St. John's Work was studied head to head against some SSRI type antidepressants and was shown to be equal or better. The problem is that St. John's Wort is a plant and in the public realm. The FDA recommends against it.

In placebo coltrolled double blind studies, placebos often work better than SSRIs.

I am not a fan of most SSRIs due to the real and present danger of the lowering of the seizure threshold. I see about 1 person per year develop epilepsy while taking SSRIs.

My best advice is to get a Doctor who listens and will work with you. There are alternatives to SSRIs.

I'm a big fan of trying to get to your young mans weight again, also regular exercise. Getting the blood pumping loods the system with good hormones. You also get an extra veinfull of the good stuff anytime you look in the mirror and see results or get a compliment. All natural, natures strongest medicine. I appreciate some mental illness needs drug treatment but I think the world needs to slow down a bit on the prescription rate. I keep casting my mind back to the 80's etc and I just dont remember it that hard for us to get through without all these drugs about.
