One rifle, one pistol

Post by Old Savage »

Ok, here it is ... one rifle, one pistol here on out, that is it, unlimited support --- you can reload or found a ton of ammo.

No crawdading. One pick each that is it. Others will be deleted.

BTW, this is Carlo Rossi Burgundy ... the cheapest.

WASR 10-63 with Tech Sight and Red Star trigger. Easily capable at 300 meters with the flip up aperture, or 60 on a running buck.

Image

Glock 30SF with extra G21 mags. Five MO Bullet Flatheads at 100 yards and no, I can't do it on demand. I can keep them on a B27 at that distance.

7.62 NATO rifle, any flavor

my reasons ... the 7.62 will always have ammo available. it can be loaded from quiet round-ball meat-maker to honest sniper quality long range moose or caribou or car killer... I think of it as a 30-30 bulked up on steroids, with expanded duties. it takes over from the Redhawk as the range expands.

44 mag pistol, Redhawk or Super Redhawk only

the 44mag with a 405g hard cast bullet owns anything inside a hundred yards, it has the wound forensics of a 45/70. With 44spl it owns everything inside the house. . I choose this over every other hand gun choice because of the experience I have with it, and it will do stuff most others can't. it can replace every other firearm I have for meat and greet. it out guns a shotgun (about =12ga slug) as a field gun, except for birds in flight, and I don't eat birds...

there are all kinds of combinations, but for the specified question I am 100% confident in this combination...

I'd love to say my 1895 GS and Single six. But the truth is it'd be my Springfield Scout Squad and my Randall lefty 1911A1. I know the 7.62x51 and the .45 acp well. I know they work when it counts.

But you forgot one shotgun. In that case my choice is a lefty Remington 870, 12 gauge of course.

My Marlin 336 in .35 Remington and my RIA 10 mm. I would like a third in .22 lr, but those 2 will do most anything I need to do.

If I had to pick from the items I currently own...probably my M1a and a Ruger MII both with suppressors. Honestly I don’t know and more importantly I am glad I don’t have to make that decision.

A 7.62 NATO AR10 and a 5" barreled .357 Rem. Mag Ruger GP100 would certainly simplify things.
A bunch of Y'all, similarly armed, would ensure that none of us would need to fire a shot in anger.

Twelve guage 870 and a .22 revolver. Equipped for any game in North America as well as the greatest shooting enjoyment there is, trap, skeet, sporting clays.
Center fire rifles are nice but, when it comes down to it, they are superfluous.

AR15 platform (one rifle, many uppers in different calibers). Pistol is a tough one though, either a Freedom arms in 44 mag or 45 Colt (durn, would have to buy one!!) or a 9mm or 45 on the 1911 platform with a 22 conversion.

I'll play along …… again. We seem to bring this question up once or twice a year. I wonder how much my answers have changed over the decades and what that says about me and my view of things.

Well anyway for March 2019 my answer would be ……

S&W model 60, 357 mag, with 3" barrel and adjustable sights.
Remington 870, 12 guage, with a couple of different barrels and various accouterments.

Simply two of the most versatile firearms that I own.

Yea Wm......our decisions do change..........it's easy to see (no condescending) the guys who "know guns" as opposed to the ones who think they know guns.

At one time, in my 20's I would have said, "a 5 screw Smith and Wesson Model 29 with an 8 and 3/8ths barrel and a pre lightweight deluxe "1886 in 50-105-450 with a 32" barrel.

Yea Fred......as a man of your nobility and intellect, let the deleting begin.------6

Just thinking about what I use the most and what I might use makes me lean towards what I use now rather than a guess at whatever may happen in the future. If the EOTWAWKI comes along then like Gunny says, lots of military stuff around if you want it.

My Winchester 9422 in .22lr will take care of the type of hunting I do and an old Uberti Navy 1851 sure was a lot of fun.
I guess I could be persuaded to get a Henry L/A .410 instead of the 9422 .

Maybe a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington and a 1911 in 45 ACP with a 22 lr conversion.

I thought about an SKS, but it's just a wee bit too light for bear or moose in Maine.
Also thought hard about a S&W 357 Magnum with a 4" barrel. (If I was feelin' snarky,
I'd point out that you did say "pistol" and not "handgun"....... ) Still, I don't
think I'd be disappointed with either the 357 or the 1911.

All kidding aside, it would depend on WHAT was happening....

An EMP or massive disaster where chaos would erupt, especially in an urban area, would be an entirely different scenario than if a person just decided to heck with it and wanted to pack up the van and head to the mountains to live a few months or years off-the-grid.

The latter scenario would certainly make me consider:

> a 22 LR - because I could have 5,000 rounds of ammunition, and for small game hunting use that could last for years
> a 357 or 44 or 45 caliber levergun - because it could hunt the big critters when needed

The 22 LR could 'snipe' a terrorist/intruder if appropriate, and the levergun could be gotten out once the battle had officially begun. Like others said, eventually, if you survived and the bad guy(s) didn't, you would soon have whatever THEIR firearm(s) were.

I'm sure my answer is different than the last time this question came up but I've come to the conclusion I'm probably going to pick my truck guns. Thats always a .30 caliber rifle and a handgun or two in my trucks so I guess right now I'd have an 1895 Winchester in .30-06 and a Glock 10mm. Other days it might be a .30-30 Winchester or a .308 Ruger GSR and a .45 Colt single action.

When shot down Gary Powers was carrying a High Standard HD .22 auto pistol with a silencer. Think about it. A very good quiet gun for poaching chickens to stay alive on your walk out of Russia! I have one like it but no silencer.
https://taskandpurpose.com/history-cias ... tol-choice
I was privileged to meet powers when he was a lockheed test pilot and I was a guard for them. My HDM was used in a murder. I had a captain friend who was a deputy in colorado around 1960. They got a call on a murder at a filling station and Frank was nearby. They caught the guy but couldn't at first find the weapon. Finally Frank found it on the roof of the station. After the trial the judge gave frank the gun. I had a 1899 Savage Frank wanted and we traded. I later found a beautiful set of used carved ivory grips for it with a cougar on one side and a goose on the other. That could be a good gun to have were you having to melt into the night and snipe livestock to survive.

I also worked with a retired CID agent doing his retirement job with me as a guard that also told me he had been issued one. He didnt say if it had a silencer and I never thought about it until I wrote the above post. I knew him before I met powers. Once Gary came to my gate waiting to be picked up by his wife. I had my 1963 Harley dresser parked alongside the guard shack. He asked to sit on it. I said, Gary I will swap you that harley for a ride in the TR-2. (Newer version of the U-2 he was testing). He said I wouldn't like it, it was like sitting with your head in a gold fish bowl for 12 hours. Poor guy later got killed in a helicopter.

Cool story about Powers; thanks for sharing. He was a second cousin or some such of my best friend in school.

I suppose a suppressed Ruger Mk-3/45 or one of their other threaded models would be a similarly good choice. If you could lock the bolt so it wouldn't cycle that would make it even quieter.

Belgian BLR in 308 which wears a 2.5x Redfield with post reticule. 5" Colt 1911 built by Bud Price in 45 ACP.
or: Winchester/Miroku 73 SRC and my 2nd gen Colt SAA both in 44-40.
or: Rhodie FAL, (I have some 308 already loaded) and my Browning Buckmark 22. I probably have enough 22 to last me. Yeah the FAL and Buckmark, final answer.

Jeepnik, the most reliable semi rifle will have a adjustable gas piston system not a DI gas tube that can get so plugged gas won't go down it. For ammo my pick is 62gr speer gold dots. danny

Doc, in my Ruger MkII the Aquila Super Colibri will not cycle the slide suppressed. If I want it to go semi auto Inhave to use the Remington subsonic or equivalent. I also have a Fiala manually operated magazine fed 22 handgun that is..well manually operated.
