Not a levergun but could still use your help Remington 510

Post by Rube Burrows »

I have an old Remington 510 Targetmaster that has developed a problem of firing without touching the trigger. Sometimes if the safety is put into the fire position it will automatically fire the rifle. If that don't fire it then if the bolt is bumped any it will usually send a round down range. Found this out while in the field a couple years ago hunting squirrel. Luckily I practice gun safety and had it pointing in a safe direction. I decided that I would like to get this rifle back working. Its such an accurate gun. I generally do a lot of my own gunsmithing if it don't involve machine work. I am not all that familiar with the inside of this rifle though. Appears to be pretty simple but I am not sure what is causing its problems.

Here is a video showing the problem.

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Sounds like, just off the top of my head, like a worn sear.

Fairly easy to replace one and see if that solves the issue.

I'm thinking you got this used, I'd bet the previous owner tried to do a trigger job, screwed it up and unloaded it. Track down a sear and maybe even a trigger and replace.

However take the barreled action out of the stock and look at the engagement surfaces, bet there isn't much engagement...

They sound like good single shot rifles, worth the price of a new sear. I wouldn't mind a Remington 510 myself.

Think the shop i hang at has one, I'll check later. You wanna jet over and get it if they do? Todd

Yes they are great rifles and well worth fixing, every one is more accurate than i can shoot.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Nothing would please me more than to buy all my guns in the States...
I have seen a 512 over here so maybe a 510 is also lurking.

Agreed. The gun is absolutely worth fixing. I have harvested a good many squirrel with this rifle years ago. Great sights and super accurate. Hope you can find one or something similar one day over there.

Thanks for all of the tips. I will research some of those parts and try to figure out what I need for this one.

I have a 511 I bought when I was 14 and have never owned anything else as accurate or easy to shoot.

This is very common with this series of rifles, Bubba just cant resist trying to a trigger job and the result is what you see.

If it were me, my first step would be to call Brownells and ask to speak with one of their gunsmiths that has experience with Remington 510s. They are great people and are eager to help you.
