Thanks, i made a stop for the lock and shot it half a dozen more times, works good and put a little oil here and there to get rid of the squeak.
Now to build a base for it. :)

Reminds me of a guy in town that drove two posts in the ground and made a rig to launch a crow bar.

Looks like you thought it through to the last detail! The elevation ratchet is great! Only thing I see that might be a benefit would be 2 more handles on the crank but that's not too important. Impressive piece of engineering!! Now for a range report please.

The suggestion about using a fish catching setup on it sounds fun. Big carp can be baked with stuffing and made to taste good. That should poke through one with ease.

Thanks guys, Chuck i don`t have a clue where i`m going to put it, out in the shed with the 15 spinning wheels and dragsaw and piles of other stuff we made.
Not many people around that are interested in stuff we make which is depressing but what can ya do enjoy them yourself i recon.
I`m curious how far it will shoot but weather isn`t cooperating but might warm up a little next week.
I`m not expecting any great distances from it but if it will hit a target at 20-30 yards i`ll be happy.
I`m happy with the way it turned out. :)

I read about an antique crossbow that was in a museum and was tested for distance. It shot a bolt over 400 yards. That
one must have been at the extreme of what was possible back in the day.

Thanks fellers, it`s kinda heavy so probably be a short range affair.
MM i have no idea how far it`s going to shoot, i imagine the shorter and lighter bolts will shoot the farthest.
Supposed to get near 20 by Friday so may get it out but won`t be able to shoot over about 30 yards, to much snow to shoot across the field i wouldn`t be able to find the bolt.

Cool buddy!
Have to make it like a harpoon and tie some kite string to the bolt. Then you won't lose it.
Or....use 1/8" cable and hitch it to a winch. You could shoot a deer and then pull it back without having to wade through the snow! :D

Kinda cold and wind but couldn`t wait any longer, had a couple hiccups and a couple times the bolt didn`t make it half way to the target.
I believe what`s happening is the points are so heavy that they lift the nock end of the bolt and the string slips under the bolt.
Will have to fix that problem, otherwise two shot a foot into the bale at about 25 yards.

Image

The one that went over the target went through two pieces of tin.

Thanks Gunny, i do have a junk of carpet but anxious us forgot to put it up or can put a couple more bales up.
I think i`m going to have to put a groove between each elevation grooves it`s not fine enough adjustment.
Pretty happy but not as powerful as i`d like but the string slipping under the bolt could be affecting things also in a bad way on some shots. :)

Lol, i had wadcutter bounce off a log and make the same noise on the shed. Never could find the dent! All I'm gonna do is try to make a reasonable facsimile of a tipi, out of small Poplars and a painter's cloth drop cloth. Hope we get the warm weather this weekend so we can both enjoy our projects.
