Searchers find the USS Hornet

Post by Bill in Oregon »

The late Paul Allen's search team has located the wreck of the USS Hornet three miles below the surface off the Solomans. She is in remarkable shape.

That's crazy to see an old Cornbinder strapped down to the deck? What did they use a tractor on deck for? Wonder how good it can really be having taken 14 torpedo hits?

They weren't cutting the grass but they were used as a tug to pull the planes around.
14 torpedoes AFTER we tried to scuttle it! I'd say that one tough old broad!!

Guessing that the relative lack of oxygen at that depth is what is preserving her from rust.

Yeah, anything brought to the surface from that wreck will quickly rust to pieces if not cared for.

If I had deep pockets I’d like to get the old IHC and restore it .

I wonder if that's possible, even if you got it? From what I've heard and read, once ferrous metal is in salt water for a long time it pretty instantly turns to rust on contact with the air. Those who salvage artifacts build special containers to keep the items raised in the same saltwater they were in until they can get them too a lab to neutralize. I think something that large would be tough to contain, and then neutralize without some normal damage to exposure to the air.

Anyone know what the plane model is that was in the vid in the news? Looks like its one that the wings folded.

Hard for me to tell? I thought it was a Curtiss Helldiver? Might also be a Boeing XF8B Long Range Fighter.
Navy had numerous folding wing planes for carriers that had specific tasks for torpedos, fighters, dive bombers, etc.

Marlinman93,
Look at the landing gear. The F3f and F4f retracted into the fuselage like that. The others retracted into the wings.

Good eye Joe! I didn't catch the hole being the retracted hole for the landing gear!

Marlinman,

I've always had a fascination for the Grumman cat series. At one time I had models of all of them hanging on my bedroom wall. The Wildcat and Tigercat was my favorite.
