Parker DH 10 gauge

#1 Post by 6pt-sika » Mon Feb 04, 2019 10:33 am

Got my first DH Parker today . Gun was made in 1889 on a 3 frame with 32 inch barrels . Sadly the engraving is pretty worn and someone saw a need to rust blue the action and Damascus barrels . Thankfully they atleast did the rust blue on the barrels instead of salt blueing . They still ting true which is a minor miracle unto itself . Only other major flaw is someone restocked it once upon a time . But for what I have in it not a bad deal at all . Just need to keep on the look out for an original 3 frame DH stock , we’ll card the barrels a bit and try the process to bring the Damascus back out . Maybe eventually I’ll take the action apart , soak the reciever in Apple cider vinegar to remove the blue and send it off for a color case job .

It sure looks like honest wear, if it could only talk! I've often wondered how many fine doubles have been ruined by salt blueing.
Good score!

Seventy five of them drop at .730-.732” and weigh 660-680 grains . With a .010” Mylar wrap and the petals removed from the SP-10 wads they oughtta be right on time

Those will thump the snot outta a deer!
I have a Browning BPS 10, I've only ever shot buckshot out of it, shot 1 deer with it, yearling at about 10 yds as it was running at me. Had to shoot in self defense! Face full of of 00 - only dental records would have helped ID it... just too heavy to carry around.

I bet those Parker 10s let ya know they have gone off!

I’ve killed a number of deer with 10 gauge guns (all SxS so far) using handloaded Buckshot in sizes 00000 , 0000 , 000 , 00 , 0 , 1 , 2 and 3 . Also killed them with two different slugs I cast and the one above will hopefully be the third ! Here’s one I plunked this year at 26 yards with 0000 buck DRT . Incidentally that’s a factory original Parker EH 10 gauge with factory original 28” barrels made 1891 .

Put my Sizemaster 10 gauge loader in the truck . I’ll load a dozen or so of these slugs as well as some 0 and 1 Buckshot . This will be my first experience with a solid base slug in the 10 gauge . I’ve got an NOE mold for the Lyman 525 sabot for the 12 gauge I can also make a solid base , I’ll load some of those for my 12 hammer guns later this week or next week .

Shot this bad boy with my newly cast solid base slugs today . Pushed with 29.8 grains of SR7625 , base of the SP-10 was with 2 16 gauge 1/8” card wads on top and a .010” Mylar wrap around the slug with a folded crimp . The right barrel made a relatively nice 3 shot group but its to far right . The left barrel will be okay I think inside 30-35 yards .

I got the letter on this gun yesterday seems it was ordered with checkered triggers which it has and also all the screws in the forend were to be gold plated which they are . When I got the gun and saw the screws I thought they’d been replaced with brass screws or some a hole had tried to bling bling it a bit .

Joseph E. Platt of New Haven Conn . He received it in 1889 and about 1897 he returned it to the factory for cleaning and refinishing the barrels .

I tried a little his name turned up in some charitable endeavors in the 1890’s to early 1900’s . Haven’t ascertained his livelihood as of yet . But it musta been pretty decent this gun cost him $102.50 in 1889 .

Not had much luck with finding Joseph E. Platt . Gun had a slight wiggle between the barrels and actionnwhen closed , its on face but just a tiny bit loose . My gunsmith buddy has fixed several worse then this one for me . Since the present stock isn’t a Parker factory stock I’m not gonna worry with scrounging up a D grade skeleton buttplate . We’ll just put a recoil pad on it , shooting it Tuesday with the kinda sharp wooden corners off the bags got me a little in the shoulder but that might be partly from lack of shooting for 5 or 6 weeks . I had planned to haul five Parker’s to the range today and shoot 6-10 skeet targets with each , but I failed

Went by the gun club this afternoon for a bit . Took this DH 10 and the three Parker 12 hammer guns I recently acquired. Opened up a skeet field and brought the cord to station four and laid it on the pad to be able to step on it . Shot the 10 gauge first crushed a few with the right barrel and then tried the left barrel where I preceded to cut a couple short . Tried two pair from four and got 3 of 4 . Pulled out the 0 Grads 28” 12 crushed a couple high birds and a couple low birds and then tried two pair and went 2/4 . Tried the Grade 2 30” with the copper plate stock repair , this gun is stocked with modern dimensions . I didn’t miss a single with this gun and if I’m not mistaken I do don’t miss a bird in the two pair I shot at station four . Then I went to the Grade 2 12 gauge on the 2 frame with 30” barrels and again I didn’t miss any singles at station 4 out of four pair I dropped one of the eight . Ended up shootingbthe equivalent of two normal rounds . I was pleased ! The DH needs to be tightened up a hair and a buttplate or pad installed , the 0 Grade 12 needs a front bead (it was broken off when I bought the gun) . The Grade 2 12 on the 1 frame needs to be taken apart and cleaned inside the action as the part that holds the lever to the right when open isn’t always working . The Grade 2 12 on the 2 frame needs about an 1/8” milled off the muzzles to do away with a nick and the stock needs to be removed and have a crack addressed . So ALL FOUR need a touch of work here and there ohbyeah the DH needs the barrels carded and blues a few times to bring the Damascus pattern back , but that’s for a later date . Now I need to get a scope back on my 426 REM Mag , try my handloads in the Mannlicher Schoenauer MC 30-06 Carbine and try Winchester factory BRI sabot slugs in my Browning A-5 12 Mag with the Hadtings rifled barrel .

I’ve got a bunch of new pasteboard 10 gauge boxes coming . Sometime over the next two months I wanna load 25 rounds for each size Buckshot I keep and 25 rounds for each of my 10 gauge slugs . I’m getting tired of every time a new to me 10 arrives I need to scurry around and load two of this six of that etc etc ! Also wanna load s bunch of the NOE version of the Lyman 525 sabot except with the solid base as well as some the hollow base to try inbthe three Parker hammer 12’s .

I think some of that has been dramatized for the video lols  I keep a 375 H&H Mag and I got my 416 REM Mag back that’s way way more then I’ll ever need . My buddies got a 505 Gibbs and that’s about over the top for me anymore . I need to load 15 rounds for my buddies 416 Rigby this weekend , they were shooting it when he was AR last week . He gets distraught if he doesn’t have fifty loaded rounds at all times for his “howitzers”

Had a pretty good day ! Got about 7 thousandths milled of the muzzle end of my Grade 2 two frame 12 gauge hammer gun . Have my Grade 0 two frame 12 in the vise two drill out the broken off bead and replace first thing in the AM . Also got 16 different loads for my Mannlicher Schoenauer MC Carbine in 06 loaded today . Just the Nosler 150 BT and Hornady 150 SST . Tommorrow the plan is to get a bead on the fore mentioned Parker and change the piece that retains the lever on my 0 Grade 2 frame 10 gauge top lever hammer gun . Also “plan” to get started loading slugs and buckshot , tommorrow is like to get 25 each of the 3 slugs I use in the 10 gauge as well as 25 each of 0 and #1 buck . Hopefully Thursday I can get 00 , #2 and #3 buck for the 10 gauge taken care of ! Wednesday if the weather is clear I wanna relight my Mannlicher Schoenauer MCA 243 Carbine with my Speer 105 gr Spitzers handloads , try all the 06 stuff I loaded , try my A-5 12 Mag with the Hastings rifled barrel and try the lite full choke with 3” 000 factory loads in the Benelli Montefeltro . And drag along the AR 22 and try Norma Tac ammo in it . Kinda full week , the Thursday loading might get derailed if I go shoot sporting clays Thursday morning but we’ll see !
