air rifle

Post by gcs »

I have an old crosman pump up air rifle thats not working right, if I cant fix it I may be looking for a new one.
Any recommendations?
requirements are 177 or 22, no co2, break barrel is fine, pump up is ok, don't need super high velocity, or a scope.
it needs to be accurate but don't need competition accuracy, also don't want to break the bank,

I've been looking online and the reviews on most are all over the place. figured I'd ask here as you guys are a wealth of information and experience  Thanks..

I have 2 different RWS, an old model 45, VERY accurate. Actually scary accurate- shoot a playing card on edge at 30' accurate. The other is a 350 magnum, with light pellets it will break speed of sound. It's not as accurate as the 45. I'm not fond of the trigger either.

I'd say your old pump has probably got rotten Orings. Drop Crosmen an email, they might go over it with a fine tooth comb and make it a shooter again.

I have an RWS 48 in 22 that's really nice. Good rodent medicine.
One of these days I might spring for the RWS54. Same as the '48, but
recoilless. With a really good scope on it, it's the thick end of a grand, though.

Also a Beeman in 177 like the RS2. Chinese-made, not a great trigger,
but for all of that, it's quite accurate and hell on squirrels. Inexpensive.

The RWS 34 seems like a nice gun. I don't think you'd go wrong with
one of them, and they're not too expensive.

I've had pretty good luck, and performance, from a .17 Ruger AirHawk package break-barrel I bought for less than $100 @ a BassPro a few years ago.

I sold the scope in favor of the issue fiber-optic open sights - which work just fine at those limited ranges.

My .177 NORICA THOR gas ram is only a junior air rifle but stops squirrels and pigeons DRT at 30+ yds.the fiberoptic sights are a great help for my old eyes too. It works just like a springer break barrel but no spring.

I'm extremely fortunate to have one of the best airgun repair stations in the USA just 6 miles away. So my old Benjamin pump rifles, and pistols work like new. Ollie Damon's has been repairing airguns for many decades, and even some they said they weren't sure they could repair, they've fixed quickly. I have an old Benjamin pump from the 1920's that was a mess, and it cost me a whopping $14 fort hem to make a new bolt handle, and get it shooting great!

But last year I decided I wanted a modern air rifle to practice my shooting skills during the winter. I bought a Gamo Widcat Whisper for $118 shipped off Fleabay. Had done some reviewing, and found good reviews on this model. It also had an adjustable trigger, which was a big plus on an inexpensive rifle. I got it in .177 caliber, and it shoots lighter 7.4 gr. pellets at 1300 fps. The Gamo Wildcat is not a spring action gun, but an air piston, break barrel. So it doesn't have the shake of a spring action upon firing.
When I got it here I quickly found out that Gamo puts a short screw in the trigger adjustment to limit how light you can make it. Went to the hardware store and bought a slightly longer screw for $1, and installed it. That dropped the 4 lb. pull to less than 2 lbs. as set now. The Gamo will shoot .5" groups off a rest at 50', and that's the limit I have for my target in my backyard. It came with a 4x Gamo scope too, so all in it's a great gun for a very low price.

Vall, I didn't know Ollie Damon's worked on airguns. Are they still in business? I thought I heard a rumor ...

For inexpensive springers, I have had good luck buying the Chinese Xisico guns from Mike Mellick here:

Still struggling with my benji titan .22.........
It'll stack em at 20 yards, then go off on a tangent, in waves.... crazy thing. Trigger fix, three different scopes, same thing. That's after having to replace the rubber seal doodad...... I should have just returned it, but I continue to have hi hopes, hard-headed as I am. I just like it for some reason. New barrel is next.

Moral of the story - I should have done more homework in regards to my expectations.

You mention fixing the old rifle. Are you aware you can get almost all the parts for a number of old Crosman guns?

https://support.crosman.com/hc/en-us/ca ... s-Diagrams

Download the parts diagram for the model you have, check out the part numbers for the offending part(s), order from Crosman. Most parts are quite inexpensive. I believe they still charge a flat $4 shipping/handling fee so make sure you order everything you might possibly need to fix it up.

No CO2, eh... (just had a blast introducing some new shooters to the joys of the Crosman 2240 single shot pistol)

Give the Ruger Airhawk a good look. It's a copy of the Diana 34 which is a marvelous piece of ordnance. The Ruger can be slicked up somewhat and turned into a really nice shooter.

Another option is go with Flying Dragon Air Rifles. Mike's got a great rep on the airgun forums for a stand up guy to deal with.

http://flyingdragonairrifles.org/index. ... duct_id=67

That's basically the same rifle as the Ruger Airhawk, but produced by Xisco and sold by Flying Dragon. If you can afford the price, buy it and get the full tune by Mike, you'll have a marvelous shooter indeed. Or you might prefer one of the other versions of the XS25 on the site.

Another current option (if you jump on it quick) is the Diana 34P being sold in .177 caliber by Cabelas for $150.

Sever guys on the GTA forum have bought one of these rifle from this vendor and they are tickled pink.

Paul, I had one of those Xisicos you cited and it was blue murder on ground squirrels to about 35 yards.
