Riddle......
Way back in the day if you came down from the hills and went into a village, fort, station, trading post etc. and asked for an absolutely essential item and the clerk or sutler or agent reaches into a bag or basket or bin or box labeled "100 for 90"......
Exactly what would you be purchasing or bartering for ?

Re: Riddle......
Answer......
How you ordered projectiles prior to the proliferation of conical bullets.....
100 round lead balls to the pound (36/100ths of an inch)
for
a rifle bored 90 round balls to the pound (38/100ths of an inch)
small bore sized rifles were far more common in the west than the hawken brothers lore would lead you to believe.
both jim bridger and kit carson were said to carry #90 rifles (.38) even in grizzly country. That's just 70 grains !
