looked at a Savage 99

Post by Grizz »

I'm wondering what the prices range for a

Savage Model 99E .308

Serial A3585XX

F stamped on receiver below model
26W stamped low on left side of barrel near the receiver
open scope mount holes on top of receiver rings
brass cocking indicator
lever latch trigger block safety.
no round counter

blond-brown furniture, imperfectly fitted, hard plastic butt plate mis-located, empty sling swivel holes..

receiver looks like it was carried a lot, but the internals look very good. the rifling looks great, and a patch has the same resistance all the way down the bore, no issues...

how would you value this?

I've seen one about a month ago and was going for $475.

FWIW, "E" stood for "economy", ergo the non-walnut stock & plastic BP.

This year's BBGV says: $250 (60% original condition), $300 (70%), $375 (80%), $450 (90%), $500 (95%), $550 (98%) & $600 (100% - NIB)

How much was the asking ?

thanks for the info.

they're asking $450. I seriously would like to have a 99 in 308, but this seems high priced.
I do like the lack of round counter...

the savage 99 website pegged this at 1936 production date, but somewhere else I read that the E was a 60s time frame, so don't know what's up with that.

The early Model 99E was made from 1922-34, in .22HP, .250/.300/.303 Savage & .30-30.

The later Model 99E was made from 1960-82, in .243/.308 & .250'.300 Savage - the early Model 99's internals were too short for the .308 family of cartridges, so Savage modified the internals in 1955. (older/shorter M-1899/99's cannot be economically converted to accept the longer cartridges)

Since the .308 family of cartridges wasn't introduced until 1955, your 99E dates from the later period.

If it was made between 1955 & 1970, it should have lever boss code (LBC) stamped into the receiver bottom near the front of the lever, with a circled letter denoting which of those years it was made (after 1970, no LBC)

In my area you would never find a 99 E for 450 bucks, six years ago I found a 99 E in a 243 for 500 & bought it
since ive looked for a 308 in any 99 but none cheaper than 650 even in the 99 E, certain areas may be less money
but not around here in Wyoming, I would say buy it as you may never find a better deal

A358xxx dates to 1969. The Serial Number "A" prefix started in December 1968. The 99E is the economy 99 model with cheaper wood. It is the only 99 with internal rotor w/o a round count window and the only post-60 standard model with the lever safety (the other standard post-60 models have tang safety). They are factory drilled and tapped.

The .308 is the most common 99E chambering; of 63 noted 99E .308 sales over the last couple years, the average sale price was $538, with a low of $330 and a high of $880. If the one you are looking at is in nice shape, IMHO, nothing wrong with that price. With a 20" barrel, makes a nice carry 99.

IMO, the nicer .308 99s were from 1954-1959; nice walnut with hand checkering. The 99F (feather weight, 22") would be the most common and you could likely pick one up in the $750-900 (if you don't mind non-original additions like recoil pad and sling studs, less). Don't rule out the .300 Savage in one of these pre-1960 rifles ... great deer rifle, there is a pretty nice 1949 99EG .300 savage with a non-original recoil pad added for sale online in Cabela's gun library for $499 (not mine, but I was tempted).

Thanks for the info Keith. Yeah, I might give it another sniff if it's still there.

Shot first deer on the Mogollon Rim with a 99 in 243. 308 is fine by me, and I like the lever block safety and the no-round counter. helps keep the innards dry.

If you prefer the look of the older 99s w/ walnut and tapered octagon bbl.:

I found this one at the last Wanamacher. It's a 308 engraved Savage Arms on left and Model 1895 on right. I guess they were made in 1995. Would look better with a tang sight. I don't remember the price but it was cheap.

M. M. Wright, you have the 1895 Anniversary Model made in 1970 (75th Anniversary).

Thanks Keith, it probably says that on the medallion. I just couldn't resist the configuration.

Grizz...even an "economy" grade 99 is a well made gun...made better than the junk Winchester was churning out at the same time.....there are no cheaply made or put together 99's.....they don't make em anymore.

If I was a young man and beings that the pre war stuff in nice condition is getting out of hand as to value, I would dive into the post war Savages as the quality is still there and many can still be bought reasonably, along with more variations in caliber than the Winchester or Marlin. I'd like to add they shoot better and can handle higher pressures than their counterparts.

Back in the day, a hard working American would almost always buy the Winchester or Marlin. It was the "uppity" American who bought the Savage.

5 bills? More than fair. Five bills don't buy much anymore, maybe a month or two of electricity or a down payment on a car insurance bill.----6

my thinking is evolving... I have a great roller lock 7.62 for that caliber... and I am also thinking about a new upper for an AR pistol in .458 OR .50 . I am almost agnostic about which one since the business end is closely related, EXCEPT that 458 has projectiles to 600gr. I don't know what the 'heavy for caliber' bullet weight would be for the 50 Beo.

The reviews I saw and read are comparing LIGHT FOR CALIBER bullets, which is pathetic when looking at a gun that is purpose loaded to STOP charging bears, moose, and trucks...

I do not trust anything from radical firearms, period.

Tromix and Anderson are costly.

Is there an upper that's in-between in price and high quality, meaning correct is all regards as to setup and barrel quality????

Buying components for a do-it-myself hack doesn't seem to knock the cost down at Tromix or Anderson, what else is there? I'd like a 12.5" barrel with an adjustable gas block, single feed ramp, threaded just in case, with a long enough rail on the receiver and a short rail on the gas block OR a dovetail for a standard rifle sight at the business end. All for 9.99 and free shipping!

It would make beach combing in Alaska much more fun than carrying a 556 around with my fingers crossed...

What say ye gentlemen?

Go 458 or heck even 375 socom. Granted ya get more frontal & weight in 458 but the 375 might be a bit more pleasant to shoot.
I'd just buy the upper, might be able to give someone a spec sheet with what ya want.
