350 Winchester Legend

Post by BenT »

I see Winchester has announced a new cartridge. The 350 Winchester Legend. Based on the 223 case , straight walled with a .355 diameter bullet. It will be a good option for hunting in certain states that require straight walled cartidges. I am just interested because of reloading 351 Winchester. I use 223 brass for the 351 so hopefully the 350 Win will be a new source of brass. The 350 Win has a 150 gr at 2350 fps hanging with the 30-30 and a 265 grain subsonic. We will see if the AR crowd embraces this or not.

My understanding is that it will NOT work with the AR platform. Major faux pas by Winchester.

Paul, over on the AR forum (I know, everyonce in awhile, one has to slum)... they are discussing several wildcat builds of this type. In the "AR Variants" section.

Well, I stand corrected - I believe. There's a lot of speculation out there, it'll be interesting to see how this shakes out.

I was eating my cheerios before going to work, skimming the topics and that one didn't pop out. Which suprised me because if it isn't being talked about here it just isn't that important. :)
It's good to see that this stuff isn't getting past you guys.

March Guns & Ammo has an article about the 350 legend.
Simply states the 350 is easy shooting, miserly uses powder, effective on deer from 13 -200 yds. The author likes it's mild recoil.

Sounds like a double length 9mm (9x19 vs. 9x 40). Rimless 357 Max?

Pretty much a rimless 357 max. A drawback I can see , is that it uses a proprietary case with a rebated rim @0.390" base dia. vs the 223/5/56 base dia. of 0.376", so cannot make brass from the plentiful 223/5.56 cases. Oh, and that you can't use carbide dies to reload the thing.

I hope they release brass along with ammo, so I won't have to buy factory rounds to have the brass to reload. That would be a deal breaker for me. I would just have a reamer ground by Manson to where I could use 223 basic brass from Starline to make cases to fit my own barrel. Better yet, Starline make cases for the 350 legend. Brass problem solved

I'll have to recheck the article but I think it said they use 223 case and the bullets are produced on a 9mm machine with minor tooling changes.

I know I've heard of people cutting down plentiful .223 brass to make .380 rounds. I think the first thing I read about this new cartridge was that it would be a big seller in states that require straight walled cases for deer.

Maybe Big Horn Armory will come out with a rifle in .357 Max.

According to the Guns&Ammo article the 350 uses 223 case.

Starline has making 223 Basic brass that is straight wall, they skip the last step or 2 to that gives it the neck and shoulder, they dont trim it either so the case lenght varies by a few thousandth's.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

The majority of middle bore cartridges have failed within the marketplace due to weak sales. Unfair but true. I really thought that the .356 would be a huge seller but it is rapidly fading into obscurity. The best way for the 350 Legend to become popular is through mass marketing, affordable rifles chambered for it, and easy to access ammo. This ammo must be affordable as well. I hope that Winchester sales are successful.
