2.5 grains of clays in 357
Any guesses what 2.5 grains hodgon clays will run in a 357 and 158grain hi-tek coated lead bullet? Is clays very position senstive? Id like to load some up but wanted to make sure it will make it out of a 24" barrel.

Not exactly sure which powder you are asking about.
Hodgon reloading shows Universal which I think was universal Clay's...?

I would guess around 750fps and might be concerned about it making it down your 24" tube. If you do try it, take a rod (I use brass 1/4" welding rod--30" long IIRC) and hammer to remove the stuck bullet. IIRC, Clays is around Red Dot/Promo speed.

Yep. It’s a bit faster than red dot.
Kind regards,

Ok thanks folks I might stay around 3 grains. Its subsonic and not getting stuck so that's good enough.
Re: 2.5 grains of clays in 357
Yes, be very careful about which Hodgdon "Clays" you are using -- back when I switched from using Unique, there was "Clays" for my shotgun loads, and "Universal Clays" which I used in 32s, 38s and 357s handgun loads. I'm thinking most folks now call that last one just "Universal", but with 10 # of it in the cellar, I haven't needed to buy any in awhile.
My standard target/plinking load for a 158gr SWC or RNFB in a ,357 case is 4.5 grains of Universal -- not "Clays".
FWIW, in my experience, Universal burns much cleaner, is more accurate, has a lower ES and Sd than Unique powder and is less position sensitive -- than Unique.

FYI, you'd better check your data -- as Hodgdon lists the starting load for "Clays" with a .357 158gr LSWC as 3.2 grains -- even with a coated bullet (versus lead) that load of "2.5 grains" might be starting too low............

For what it's worth mickbr-- QuickLoad thinks your 2.5 grains of Clays would give you 880 fps at 12.5k psi. So doesn't appear to be at risk of sticking in the barrel. And QL thinks your 3 grains would give 970 fps at 16.5k psi, if you want to compare your actual velocity against QL's predictions.

I'm using Universal in 28 ga, it's dirty but I think I need more wad pressure...Old No7 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 26, 2019 11:08 amYes, be very careful about which Hodgdon "Clays" you are using -- back when I switched from using Unique, there was "Clays" for my shotgun loads, and "Universal Clays" which I used in 32s, 38s and 357s handgun loads. And yes, your point of the different powders with 'clays' was what I was getting at.

Re: 2.5 grains of clays in 357
I was going off an old Hornday manual. 2.8grains clays behind 158grn cast, for 850fps, 16" barrel. I thought I would ask lower at 2.5 grains to see if anyone goes that low. I'm not starting with these loads btw, I'm working back.

Thanks earlmk, I might work a little lower than 3 grains then. And sorry to all I should have said this would be Hodgon straight 'Clays' not Universal clays. https://www.hodgdon.com/clays/ Btw Am I alone in thinking its a bit crazy a company naming two powders that way?earlmck wrote: ↑Sat Jan 26, 2019 11:15 am For what it's worth mickbr-- QuickLoad thinks your 2.5 grains of Clays would give you 880 fps at 12.5k psi. Nope, not alone at all -- that's why I responded the way I did, and I think that's why they're downplaying (or dropping?) the "Clays" or "Clay Technology" tagline after "Universal"; I see it's on my older cans/bottles * but some images online now only show "Universal".
... * Yeah, I do need to reload more...
Good luck.
