86er .45-70 article from the past

Post by crs »

Somehow, I missed this article from "back when" and just saw it for the first time posted in the 45-70 section of another forum where it was new to all! Small world, eh?
Some portions of it has been posted on Leverguns.com as have some of the pix. Enjoy!

Great article. I remember it well. Have it bookmarked. I remember him saying how the PHs in Africa gave him pelosi about the 45-70. Results speak for themselves.
Kind regards,
Tycer

Well, one thing for sure...experience speaks and Joe has it. When I was a youngster, only Elmer Keith spoke highly of the 45-70. His favorite was the extra lightweight 1886 with the 400 gr. Speer and a mess of 3031. ----The Count

I remember this article as well.. As I recall Elmer had five ( I think) Extra-Light 45-70 Winnies and He usually loaded 53 grains of 3031. :D .

Joe sure has done some hunting that not many get to do. I always enjoyed the group hunts he organized in Hondo.

"Joe sure has done some hunting that not many get to do. "

Yes, and he and his boys are at it again with crossbows, long bows, and a SxS shotgun shooting round balls. Each of them has a single barrel muzzle loader too.

Get this - some top maker of bows saw Brandon's dead buck posts on an archery hunting web site and invited him to be in their booth at a major show in Kentucky soon. Bet he is on TV before he is 20! He has already taken a 200+ score buck with a bow.

There was a 2 part article in RIFLE magazine a few years ago about a cape buffalo hunt using a .45-70. A Hammerhead round went thru an old buff the PH had asked the shooter to kill and killed a cow standing behind it as well.

Great article, good to see Joe again, he sure looked after us in Hondo a few years back. I recently got back from a Levergun hunt in South Africa, I was surprised that I was the first Lever gunner that my outfitters had guided for.

Good to hear from you Peter.
Will you be posting some pix and detail? Such as did you use your 1895 .405?

Also WRT Leverguns outfitters, Chris Troskie has hosted several Leverguns safaris, including mine in 2012 for Cape Buffalo
with my 1895 .405 WCF.

Time is going by way too fast. Last time I saw Joe and his kids, they were barely tall enough to hold bows. Unreal!
