A New Single-Shot Rifle on the Market

Post by Pete44ru »

.

T/C has introduced a non Contender/Encore break-open single-shot rifle, the Outfitter G2, in pistol chamberings - most likely for states allowing only short/straight walled CF cartridges for deer.

IMO, it looks like a cross between a H&R/N.E.F. and a Brazillian CBC - but I like the fluted barrel.

It “looks” kinda not high quality . May shoot very well but just isn’t eye appealing to me .

T/C long ago trademarked the “G2 Contender”.

Traditions recently came out with the “Outfitter G2”.

Similar product, similar name... Similar enough even to confuse a savvy gun guy like Pete. However not similar enough to violate T/C’s trademarked name. Traditions will definitely sell some guns based on people recognizing “G2” or at least get people to look at them based on an incorrect name recognition.

BTW the G2 Contender is essentially a baby Encore in mechanism that is scaled down to Contender size and compatible with Contender barrels. The original Contender had complicated internals including a set trigger mechanism. The set trigger was the reason you need to squeeze the trigger guard after decocking. Squeezing the trigger guard both unlocked the barrel and reset the set trigger mechanism.

Interesting...

EABCO also has a single-shot that seems to be well-made...pricey but accurate.

I'm sorry and not meaning to be argumentative , BUT if I'm after a single shot centerfire the Ruger #1 , or a Sharps version of the 1885 or the Dakota 10 or the Blaser K-95 are more to my liking . The whole Contender Encore thing has never really been my cup of tea . Owned several over the years and still have an old Contender handgun but they just do not grow on me so to speak .

The Savage 24 Series S type action break is an interesting choice. Probably cheaper to make than a tang lever.

brand i.d. aside, the traditions get good reviews and there is an outdoor show sponsored by them and they use those break-open exclusively.....

but they cost as much as the henry made-in usa single-shots....

for $120 less than the traditions you can get the c.v.a. hunter (made in the same ardessa factory).....

the c.v.a. comes both in .450 bushmaster and .45-70 (5.75 pounds - ouch !).....

the question is, two different bore diameters ?

or does the .450's .452" rattle down a .458" bore ?

or does the 45-70 get swaged in one heck of a hurry down the .452" bore ?

I've got 2 Model 97s, one in .300 Benchrest Magnum and the other 6.5 BRM, bought years ago when I could get 2 for less than the price of 1 today. True custom rifles, quality far, far above anything Traditions puts out. Same length and weight as a Marlin 336 carbine but power and accuracy to make them true 300-yard deer rifles.

I like the looks of the EABCO but if they are only chamberings the calibers they want they aren't CUSTOM IMO.
