I Yam Speechless

Post by Pete44ru »

.

My oldest Grandson is a Design Engineer @ the Electric Boat division of General Dynamics (a US defense contractor that builds submarines).

He has gifted me with a belt-buckle sized plaque awarded to him.

Each boat's commemorative plaque is made from the same steel as the keel of the relevant boat, and awarded to those who participate in designing/making the underwater craft.

The obverse:

The reverse:

Needless to say, I remain stunned...……………..(and proud of my GS)

(I had a fleeting thought of making it into a belt buckle, but finally couldn't bear to deface such an award like this.)

If you should want a buckle made you could have a silver smith do a sand cast or lost wax cast for it. I did an internet search and there are several places that can do this.

Wow! Very nice. I would certainly leave it as is.

That's a really special gift indeed, it would make a fantastic buckle but I would keep it on display as is....... 8) 8) 8)

Pete I think you should get a see through shadow box / model box for that so it can be see 360°. Then set proudly where all can see it.

Absolutely a priceless treasure. Have a good silversmith make a copy as a belt buckle.

You are rightly proud of your grandson.
Plus engineers are alright by me.
Is he at the Quonset or Groton facility?

He's recently married a Connecticut gal, Jason - and lives nearby his Groton workplace.

This is him & his newlywed:

Howdy Folks,
Speaking of submarines and Groton, CT, I worked at a place in Mpls,MN that built some of the missile tubes for the Trident subs... A huge project and a work of art when finished...
They were 40' long and I could walk thru one when finished...
These missile tubes were installed in two rows in front of the conning tower..
The amazing part was that each ship set was 24 tubes....!!!
It's hard to imagine the ship could surface with all that weight.....

Merry Christmas to all you folks....

I think that I'm gonna embed it in a clear resin/Lucite block, similar to this:

I have forwarded everybody's comments & commendations to my Grandson, and can report that he's stunned (in a good way) - as he never expected any.

Thanks, folks !
