Largest game with your 357?

Post by mickbr »

Talking a carbine or rifle , what have you shot or like to shoot with your 357 folks? Most of my hunting is just hogs and I find it works well on them. Longer ranges they can run aways before piling up, but being I'm not using a scope I don't take many long shots anyway.

This elk was downed with two quick shots at a distance of about 50 feet. First shot slammed through both lungs. My second bullet tore across the diaphragm and blasted a hole in the liver. I estimate this animals weight at 375 lbs. The steaks and roasts were outstanding!

357 MAG is as effective as a modern compound bow at short distances in my opinion.

For a long time, armadillos was the biggest animal I ever killed with a .357 Marlin Carbine.
Then a few years ago, I got a couple hogs with my 1873 Winchester (Miroku).
I've taken deer with my .357 Maximum early model TC Contender

After about 18 or 19 shots @ 800 yards near Raton, NM, I got a 12 foot grizzly... err... black... er steel bear. Made a satisfying little 'tink' sound... barely heard over the echoes of the previous shots!!!! :P :P :P

I did that near Forsyth Montana with my 1892 Winchester (Miroku) in .45 Colt using normal pressure loads. On a steel buffalo a little over 750 yards away.

Pull the trigger.........(no puff).....Turn to buddy. "Did you see where it hit." He shakes his head......barely audible <ting> :D

Took about 4 seconds for the bullet to hit and the sound to get back to us.

Repeat for more grins :D :D :D

Dayum, wish we had some of them around here. I would try one on with a carefully placed 357 at 2000fps+ from a 24" rossi.

I think you and wvfarrier slaying his rogue 2000lber win this competition. 8)

Just this one that was a target of opportunity many years ago on a deer hunt. A few years ago I had to dispatch another deer that I hit with our side X side on a trail that I hit. That traumatized my wife.

I can't find the reference, but I read that when the .357 mag was first introduced They took it to Africa and dispatched all manner of big game with it, and IIRC even an elephant. I recall that the only load they had for it at that time was the 158 grain solid.

Just got my .357 a few weeks ago. So far it has only hunted paper. My son has used it at the range and likes it a lot.
