Old 73 makes meat

Post by M. M. Wright »

Shot this one late yesterday. Only had an hour or so 'til dark so just grabbed my truck gun and went to my blind. Hadn't been there 20 minutes when this guy came along. I thought; yeah, he's good enough, let's take him. Shot him at about 80 yards with the open sights that I can barely see. 200 grain XTP over 9.0 of Unique in the 44-40. Old 73 made in 1895. Made me wonder how many it's killed over the years? Probably not as many as me though. He has eleven points and since we check them in on the internet I don't know how much he weighs but about 140 dressed I think.

I love that! I have a Winchester 1886 circa 1892 with me for my doe gun after the buck goes down.
a Pennsylvanian who has been accused of clinging to my religion and my guns......Good assessment skills.

Attaboy, M.M. Just because there's snow on the roof doesn't mean there's no fire in the furnace. :D

Very nice buck & 73!
Curious if the bullet passed through or what it looked like if recovered

There is something just so incredibly right about taking that buck with that rifle. Well done.

Clean pass thru Brad. Hit him way to far back but must have clipped the big artery just under the back bone. Maybe hit a kidney. Anyway, every time I went to shoot again he'd wobble, change directions or something. 20 seconds and he was falling down having bled out internally. I would have preferred to use a cast bullet but all my molds cast .429 and this old barrel is .431 so I use some jacketed I have that are .431. It loves them tho it shoots a little high. I need a taller front sight but changing it on a SRC is a challenge. I will eventually put a tang sight on it.

Love to hear that story, so many younger hunters seem to think you need some kind of
magnum to kill large game with. 30-30s have killed more game than any other gun,
however the 44-40 might be in the running as well. Well done.

Nice... Todd
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!
