Life's Too Short To Hunt with an Ugly Gun...

Life's Too Short To Hunt with an Ugly Gun...

Well, it seems that "no deer" was tagged by me during the late November rifle deer season, as I passed on a fat doe I jumped and put the scope on -- but I held off on taking the shot, as I really want a buck...

But if you're gonna have an empty tag -- at least you can hunt with a pretty gun... And it's a levergun at that!

That's my Savage 99A in .250-3000 that I had refinished and then had professionally checkered this year, after finding out that it was "so slickery" (slick and slippery) last fall when I had to put ugly rubber patches on it (short term) just to get a good grip. (Those worked, as I tagged a big doe last fall.)

Oh well, we still have 2 weeks of blackpowder hunting here in Maine and the Solunar Tables look great for the last 2 days (end of next week), so I'll get back out there again then.

As you can see, there's at least a 6 pt and 8 pt around my stand -- if they didn't get shot yet, that is............

( That Primos Proof Gen 2 game camera takes awesome photos -- without hundreds of "wind shots" like my old Moultrie one did... )

You do have fine taste in firearms 7. My 99 has also accompanied me on quality time in the hills without drawing blood this year. Yet.

Agreed! My leverguns are highly functional, but rather plain. So here is my Beretta 45-70 double rifle.

Yep.

I don't have a photo of my Big Horn Armory model 89 that does it justice, but I can tell you it looks pretty much identical to this stock photo from the website:

Granted, the deer wasn't any deader, or happier to be shot, than when I've used my beat-up old rusty Ithaca M-66 slug gun, but....

Somehow, I just felt better....! :D

Sure Six, but you'll blend in better in black & white...

Here's my 99. Except it's a 1895 in .308. The only rifle I've taken to the blind with me this year.

I couldn't agree more #7 with your post title! Whether you take game or not, it's always more enjoyable when you're doing the hunt with a classic beauty!

You meant .303 didn't you M. M.? Or else there is a really interesting story there....

And I have a real similar one but it has a pretty rough bore that won't handle my casties and I haven't shot any jacketed through it yet because I don't shoot many of those copper-colored things.

No Earl, I meant .308 Win. This is a commemorative celebrating 75 years of Savage. I just couldn't resist that tapered octagon, crescent butt and straight grip. Wish it were a 250/3000.
