Really thought it was a yearling

Post by Les Staley »

Buddy and I hunted a piece of private land, yesterday. Legal area for controlled hunting by permit for antlerless deer, new to us. We each picked a skid trail, a mile apart and worked toward each other. Frostey frozen leaves, no way to move without making noise, I was grunting on a buck call as I skulked along. Caught a smallish deer standing, hesitated, thinking I could use a little more burger/steaks than that, seasons getting along, what the heck....bang! Walked along a blood trail Ray Charles could have followed to this nice fat buck.

Give me a modest rack and a young buck in fine condition anytime. The other fellers are welcome to the tough old mossbacks. 8)

Nicely done! Personally I'd rather hunt a wise old doe than a buck. Doe is a much smarter critter if you ask me. Plus they usually much better table fare!

Who said it first? I've read it, heard it somewhere. How about "Helen Keller could have found that deer? (Abraham Lincoln). Happy now, 2ndovc, or am I still in trouble?😂😇 (I stole that, too). Anyhow, been wanting to try out cast bullets in the 30-30 and finally bought a Lee Mould for 170 gr gas checked bullets, powder coated and sized at .311. Cast of clip on wheel weights + a dash of solder in the pot to give it a little tin, shooting into two inches at 100 yds, no leading. 29 grains of IMR 3031 . The carbine is a 1955 version. I've got a pair of 1947s , one 30-30 and the other 32 Winchester Special, but neither are tapped for receiver peep sight OR a tang sight! Both Flat Bands! Also have a 1939 that is drilled for tang sight, but borrowed the Marbles tang sight for my 1911 92 in 25-20 with a re-lined barrel.

Yes, M M Wright, it's a thirty thirty...sorry, I missed the question mark.

When you get a blood trail that good, you know you are going to have meat. Congratulations. Hope that venison is good eating.

Nice job! I've always thought does have better meat than bucks. As far as I'm concerned the only reason to shoot a buck is if you have a wall that needs something hanging on it.

When I was a kid in Michigan killed my first deer in 1961, a small buck. Have that rack on a plaque on the wall of my gun room. There was NO doe hunting, and even when Michigan finally opened limited doe permits, the older guys really frowned on anybody shooting a doe!! Lowest form of life! Deer populations started to explode in the late 70s and 80s, public opinion slowly changed and guys found out how much better a doe usually tasted than that rutty buck, shot in late Nov. given a choice, I'll usually take the biggest buck, but this late in the season, if it's brown, it's down.
