45 ACP cases made from Federal 270 Win?

Post by wm »

I have a buddy who just picked up a 5 gallon bucket of 45 ACP cases made by cutting down Federal 270 Win cases.

We both are wondering why would someone go to the trouble? Is it to use rifle primers? We are both kind of stumped on the up side of investing the time and effort in reworking these cases when 45 ACP cases are so abundant.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Wm.

P.S. Same estate had a another 5 gallon bucket of similar 45 ACP cases made from a mixture of 243, 308, 30-06, etc.

Couple of rounds made from cut down 06 family, 44 auto mag, 45acp shot shells. RCBS made dies for loading 45acp shot shells.

Well.... maybe he had a great source of cheap large rifle primers. Hard to think of any other reason to go to that kind of work for such an easily acquired case. And he probably had to ream them to get the right brass thickness, too. Goodness!

Sounds like somebody had a ton of time and energy they needed to use up!

I must have 3,000 .45ACP empties sitting here waiting for me to reload them. And probably 400-500 loaded rounds too. Probably have more .45ACP brass and ammo than anything else. .38 Special a close second place.

Here's a bit on the common 45 ACP variants:

We should, indeed. The 451 Detonics and 45 Super are different and not interchangeable.

My understanding is that Ace Hindeman bought the rights to the 451 Detonics, and then renamed it the 45 Super. I am up for a history lesson though, do tell.

I don't have any 270 W brass to section and compare with the 45 ACP brass, so is the 270 interior much heavier/thicker than 45 ACP? I doubt if primer size/type would be enough initiative to modify rifle brass. I've read about some cutting down 30-06 brass to 45 ACP size, but don't remember any details other than external measurements for the head and lower body are the same... :?:

45 Super makes sense.

And that would explain the other bucket filled with cut down 243, 308, 30-06 etc.

Thanks to you all,

My buddy has a S&W 4506 that came with he heavier recoil spring so coincidentally he is set up IF he wants to pursue it...… but I doubt he will. He is not inclined for that sort of thing. He prefers to play it safe.

My guess is now that he knows what he has he will put them up for auction on ebay or gun broker or some thing similar.

That's probably what I'd do, although I will admit to buying a box of 303 British ammo, so that I had a 'reason' to buy an Enfield...

30-06 based cases are internally thicker at the base to handle rifle pressures, so an internal reamer must be inserted to thin the case from the inside to allow 451 bullets to be seated in the cut down rifle case.

The Germans started all this non-sense with the intro of the 8mm Mauser, which begat the 30-03, which begat all of the X- 06 cartridges, begat the 308 class, begat the 243 Win....... which begat......
