Front loader range report

If I had to to, I could get by with this as my only rifle. I loaded this shot two weeks ago and left it in the rack behind my truck seat until this evening. 100 yards, rested on my truck mirror. Load is 90 grains ffg under a .451 200 grain XTP in a sabot. (It's a 50 cal) Green Mountain bullet barrel that I put in 30 years ago. Never fails me. I killed a nice buck with it at 225 yards. Sorta cheated as I missed by shooting over him one day and setting up a target and found it didn't drop as much as I anticipated so held correctly the next morning. It's a pretty faithful copy of a St. Louis Hawken, all iron furniture except for the patch box and pewter fore-end cap. Shot it for many years with a peep sight and only put the ancient Weaver on when my eyes got so bad. I roll my own paper cartridges for it and usually carry 6 or so in my bag along with my snail type capper. The single hole at 7:00 in the black is the shot I fired.

Wish I had a good Hawken type rifle. Nice setup!

I really like the scope. Never tried sabots in my Hawken. Nice shooting. Todd
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

The scope caught my eye......I have at least 6-10 of those old Weavers around here and they all work. I have another pile of bushnells, tascos, Redfields, two leupolds and even a vortex in the pelosi pile. I'll send the better ones back but the others I use as binoculars. Leave me laying around in different places..that's all they are good for.

Green mountain barrels are the way to go.---6

I've often thought about a scope mount for my Lyman round all gun, it's accurate enough with the irons but just to see how accurate it really is. Then maybe a red dot...?

I'm guessing your GM has a 1:28 twist?

You know, I honestly don't remember the twist and it's not marked but I would assume you are at least close. I know I ordered a "bullet barrel" and have been more than satisfied with it. I knew what the twist was when I got it but have forgotten. Wish they had marked it.
I have tons of one piece bases that will fit on a straight octagon barrel, just have to drill and tap a couple of holes.

My TC Encore had a 1:28 twist but i got a 1:48 from Fox River custom shop. I could shoot roundballs or full diameter stuff. I found 245 gr black belts with 2 777 pellets were extremely accurate and put animals down fast. Pellets just for ease of reloading.
