Another crack at it !

Post by 6pt-sika »

Bought a Parker VH 16 gauge on a #1 frame with 28” M/M barrels . It’s coming from Wild West in Anchorage . Hopefully it’ll be in hand by this time next week

.

You'll like it !

The Parker I once had was a pristine ca.1937 Remington/Parker 16ga VHE Skeet Gun, 26" bbls with in/out chokes and several other options ( straight grip to a checkered butt, Miller single trigger, & beavertail FE - but no VR).

I almost kept it, but gave in when a dealer offered me 5X what I had into it - which let me obtain 6 other guns I wanted.

I’d have preferred a GH 16 on an 0 frame with 26” barrels . I’ve already got a circa 1911 GH 16 on a 1 frame only problem is that one somewhere along the way shrunk from 28” to 27” . The VH 16 I passed on almost two months ago was a circa 1936 Remington Parker also on a 1 frame with 28” barrels .

Well got it today ! The stocks been refinished and someone added a pad but didn’t cut it at all . So I’ll get a stock maker friend to fit a Reproduction buttplate and shoot the heck out of it !

While I'm at it here's my circa 1891 Parker EH with factory 28" C/LM barrels and a doe I plunked last week using my home cast 0000 Buck . 8 pellets over 30 grains of SR7625 . Boom flop !

NICE!
Buckshot is much maligned but if you take the time to test ammo and chokes it can be very deadly! I've had very good luck with various flavors over the years.

I do not really use Buckshot the stereotypical way it was intended . I’ll go up my tree and pull a rifle and shotgun up . If thedeer comes inside 30ish yards I’ll try and plunk it with the shotgun otherwise I use a rifle .

I enjoy still hunting, normally if I'm walking I have my Benelli and 3" 00 . It's good to about 50 yds ,under the right conditions its accounted for many deer. My 870 likes 00 as well but only 2&3/4 Rem nickle plated or copper plated 4 buck.
If I'm in a tree I take my Savage 220 or a frontstuffer.

Thirty years ago when I had my K Gun Trap/Skeet Gun my LOP was 14 5/8” . With the pad this little Parker is right in that area , but having a bit more uhm fat layer on my shoulder and cheek that’s to long for me now .

Tried my handloaded 0 Buck at 25 yards and those weren’t worth taking a picture . The #1 handload in this gun isn’t great but it isn’t terrible either .

I was shooting off the cap on the back of my pickup . Might do a touch better with the slugs at the range from the bench . Think I’ll try some of the factory loaded slugs and #1 Buck .

Looks like you have given that 16 a good work out with the slugs!
Have you tried the Federal truball? They shot well out of my buddies win 1200 smooth bore. I'm not sure if they make them in 16 tho.

To the best of my knowledge about the only thing still being made and atleast semi readily available are Brenneke , Federal and possibly WIn an REM . All my WIN and REM slugs are older manufacture .

My little GH 16 that's missing an inch of it's barrels likes my home cast slug quite well out to 50 yards . It was to much to ask that this one did as well .

In the last couple days I've bought a few hundred dollars worth of factory 16 gauge slugs and buckshot . Most of it's stuff from other dealers that went out of business but had been in stock a number of years .

16 is the only gauge I've never shot or owned, I have and load for 12,28,410 now. I don't drag my 10 out much, don't load for it. Had 20 years ago. Guess I should look for a 16 someday.

Shot my VH 16 on the skeet field today . Shot three rounds . The first round I kinda played a bit and dropped several birds over what I consider acceptable . The other two rounds I went 23 , 24 not perfection but pleasing for a first time .
