Montana Antelope With A 1877 Sharps

Post by Shrapnel »

Hunting is as much about the gun as it is the animal you are hunting. I ordered this 1877 five years ago from Shiloh Rifles in Big Timber, Montana. It took awhile, but they finished an exceptional rifle and anything you get from them is nothing less than a custom rifle.

Sure, it isn't easy packing a 12 pound gun around, but there is a lot about hunting that isn't easy. The main thing was I did want to get an antelope with this gun.

There aren't as many antelope this fall as I have seen in the past, but I did find one group of 12 that was out in the middle of an open field where antelope prefer to live. After about a 1/2 mile stalk and crawl, I was able to get within 209 yards and carefully slip the Sharps over the rim of some rocks and take one shot. I waited until the antelope was grazing with his head down and shot him through the top of the neck and into the chest. He dropped dead in his tracks...

Wow, that is a really nice buck you got. :D

Now I would like to know more about that very fine rifle, such as caliber and barrel size. Did you use BP or smokeless?

It is the latest rifle introduced by Shiloh Rifle Company in Big Timber, Montana. It is a model 1877 in 45-70 with the traditional characteristics of the original Sharps in that same model. It has an MVA Mid-range Soule tang peep and globe front sight with removable apertures. Here is another picture in the rims on the same ranch...

That's a fine-lookin' shootin' iron. Beautiful rifle.

Even better to see it being used for it's intended purpose.

Nice post.. thanks!

Shrapnel, Kirk and the gang sure picked a nice piece of wood for you didn't they? Curious which aperture insert you like to use for hunting.

Great looking gun and a beautiful speed goat. That old .45-70 still gets the job done just as well as it did before bottleneck magnum cartridges became the only thing which would kill anything bigger than an anemic jack rabbit. If Kyle Lamb calls to tell you it is not tactical enough, don't let him talk you into putting an infrared night sight on that gun.

Quoted for truth. If there's one thing better than making a great stalk and taking a beautiful animal like that...it's doing it all with an incredible rifle like yours!

Congratulations, and thanks for posting this.

A little milling here and there and a trimmer hammer action make the ugly duckling 1874 into the shapely 1877. I wish someone made a scaled down version.
