An old Winchester in the family

Post by David LaPell »

Was thinking about my grandfather's old Winchester 1894 .30-30 the other day. The earliest photo I have is with him and it's dated October, 1936. You can just see on the fender of the car the antler of a very large deer he shot. It was just one of many. I have seen photos of him with this gun and rabbits and grouse he had taken, he pretty much shot everything with it over the years.
Another photo was my grandmother and the same 1894 in the 1970's with the only deer she ever shot with it. You can see just how little she was compared to the gun and the deer, she was all of 4 feet 8 inches tall, the darn carbine is almost as big as she is. I wrote an article back in 2008 for Adirondack Life about her taking this deer.
My grandfather hunted with the Winchester up until 1993 with it, and the last I saw it, there was no finish, the forearm was worn quite a bit, but the gun still worked. My cousin ended up with it, that was 20 plus years back, and I have never seen it since. I did get his Colt Woodsman pistol though, and he loved that gun as much as the Winchester, and I know that Colt went on every trapline.

Now that is a rifle of character. Heck, there wasn't any finish left on the receiver by the time of the 1936 photo: it had lots of use by then. And with a tang sight too. Mighty fine! Thanks for the story and pics David.

Great post, pictures, and story. Love the old pictures. I posted a pile like that last winter of my Grandparents.
Sorry the carbine got away.

Awesome ! Thanks for posting the pics of your parents - I enjoyed them, since AFAIK I am the first ever hunter/gun owner in my family, and thus have no great pics of them like those.

Thanks for sharing.

I have my grandfather's old, extremely worn 1894 SRC in .30 WCF. (Circa 1906)
I know I have seen a photo of him with it because I asked him about. He smiled and said, "That was my 1st legal deer." :D
I can't figure out which of my cousins has that photo. I'd sure like a copy of it.

I would ask each cousin if they have the pic, and (if they do) could you make yourself a copy ?

Love seeing those old Winchesters, they are worth so much more than financial value.
Great pics, thanks for letting us see it.

I've asked.
None seem to know what photo I am referring to.
Probably one of my aunts had it and the cousins just haven't realized that it's in their possession now.

I'll probably only shoot cat sneeze loads out of it. Too much headspace.
