Winchester 94 out past 100 yards

Post by David LaPell »

I have always had a healthy respect for the Winchester 94 and .30-30 as a round in general. I have had seven or eight Model 94's and a couple Marlin .30-30's, and I know that they make a great all around rifle, not just for hunting but would be a great truck gun and if I had to have one rifle for everything outside of a .22 LR, this would be it. So I decided to take it out and practice it past 100 yards. This silhouette was put out at 125 yards, which is how far the local range goes.
I shot five rounds of my handloads, 170 grain Hornady SP behind 30.0 grains of IMR-4064. My old Model 94 put all five rounds home with ease.

Now that's pretty cool....!

Especially for a vintage rifle.

You will find a bunch of folks on here who like the .30-30. Of course we like other calibers, too. Who would refuse to try other calibers, too? Lots of fun to be had with lever actions.

Welcome to the fire. This is a great place.
Nice shooting.
In 1895, we already had plenty of 100 yard cartridges. The 30-30 was considered a flat shooting, high powered rifle. The 100 yard brush gun thing was promoted mostly by post war magazine articles.

125 yards? Child's play for a 30-30. Last year at the ridgway gunclub I took an octagon barreled 30-30 made in 1908 and shot the high power silhouette match with it. From 200-500 meters. 10 shots each at 200,300,385,and 500. Off the bench with 175 grain cast bullets and scored 21x40 with these old eyes.

30-30 ain't no toy and is capable of doing a lot more than what most think. ----6

Sixgun has shot 500 meter high power silhouette with his, but there are a whole bunch of people shooting 200 meter cowboy silhouette with the 30-30. I've been tempted to get one but I find my 357 can do everything the 30-30 can at 200. I did actually consider getting into the high power matches, and getting a 30-30 for a dual purpose cowboy / hp rifle, but that costs money.
Sixgun, I'm curious which bullet you're using for HP, and how well it cycles through the magazine. Are you shooting that match with the 30-30 regularly or as a one off just for a laugh and to peeve off the elitist HP crowd?

See my post Finally some fair shootin'for my recent exploits with a .30-30 Winchester past 100 yards. Now, that's with a purpose built custom rifle for long range shooting, but I have no qualms shooting well in excess of 100 yards with a std carbine, or even with one of my Trapper mdls (16" bbl).

In fact, I generally "zero" my .30-30s @ 150 yards.
