Here's Another "I Thought I Was Done"

Post by Blaine »

I'm not THAT old, 68, but for years my knees, back and shoulders have felt 90 years old, plus. It got so I couldn't manage a full size motorcycle that weighed 600 pounds or more. I've really missed getting out on two wheels!
So when I was at the stealership I noticed this street-legal little thing and the seat was low enough for this 28" inseam to flatfoot. One thing led to another and now one is setting in the carport. For a 250cc it's gears low enough in first and second to be quick and yet there's enough oomph to get it down the highway at 60 or 65, tho I don't think it will do more than 75. I'm looking forward to getting on some of the thousands of little trails and forest service roads that abound in the area. No more Iron Butt trips, I got a nice camper for that, but this should satisfy the itch.
(This is just a stock shot pic)

Nice!

My last bike was a KLR 650, I really wish I hadn't sold it. I've been looking at new/ used bikes all summer and can't decide what I want. The new Honda Africa Twin has my interest right now, but for the price I might go for a used BMW GS. Going to try and pick up something over the winter.

Have fun out there!!

Tell me about it....This is not a freeway scoot. I-5 scares the "stuff" out of me in a pickup.

Haven't even fired my motorcycle up in maybe 6-7 years? I keep saying every winter that I need to get it running and sell it. But it sits in the garage taking up space. Maybe this winter?

Lucky for you Blaine....I've somewhat always have wanted a bike. If I was going to get one, it would be just like yours.....on or off trail/highway.

Two things in my 46 year marriage I've never been allowed to do...go to bars and have a motorcycle.----6

A buddy of mine has a similar one to yours. This guy is an electrical genius and has his set up to go 50 miles an hour. I rode it last month and it scared the hell out of me. His battery is carried in a backpack.

Around here it would be a death sentence anyway. Within a week I'd be run over by a Mercedes, BMW, Volvo or like cars. Besides, I'm not allowed to have a two wheeled vehicle.

My younger cousin isn't a big thing, but she's ridden horses and hogs her entire life. Got a Can-Am and promptly wrecked it. Went back to two wheels and hasn't looked back. Even knowing they handle differently, the old muscle memory kicked in and undid her.

I rode ATC's since they came out until after some darned fool banned them. But two rear wheels and two front wheels have nothing in common when it comes to handling. I prefer the way a conventional trike handles.

About 2012 I got all starry-eyed over the new Super Tenere. OMGosh! what a monster performer. Thing is, it was about 4" too high for my stubby 28" inseam. I had to get rid of it before I kilt myself. I understand the Africa is an even match for it. Enjoy. I also wanted the BMW dual sports, too tall also. I can at least flat foot this one and pick up it's scant 291 lbs....

Yeah, you need to be 6'+ and have relative's named Gunter to get on one of the BMWs. My KLR was pretty tall and a great bike but I want to get away from the single cylinder. Going to give those new Honda's a serious look, but I've been wanting a BMW since I was a teenager.

For the rider, motorcycles are sort of a timeline. You start small, get bigger and bigger, then smaller and smaller. I was probably ill-advised to get this one, but dammit I wasn't ready to give it up as of yet. Oh, well...I look good on crutches.

The reason I don't get a motorcycle is that I don't want someone else putting me on crutches. Around here that is a real possibility. The majority of drivers are good, but there are just too many jerks who cause problems. It only takes 1 bad driver to cause an accident and affect several hundred others.

I've always held that even if the other guy is a jerk, it takes another guy not paying attention, or following too close to cause most of the accidents. I've never wrecked or been wrecked.

Nice, Blaine. :D
Many years ago, I started my riding career in the dirt. I had a 73 Yamaha DT-250, then a 78 DT-175. I took my road test on an 82 Honda XL-250R.
I had one street bike, an 82 Suzuki 550 Katana, then it was back to big bore on/offs. Had an 89 Yamaha XT-600, then finally a 92 Honda XR-600R that I plated and made (barely) road legal.
There isn't a day I don't miss having a dirt bike. :(
Have fun, Blaine!

I was wrecked recently in my car because there was nowhere to go. I had no way of avoiding it. Someone on a motorcycle with a quick motorcycle, good reactions, and the skill to split lanes in less than half a second from brake lights all across the 5 lanes to impact or move to let the driver behind you hit the car which had been in front of you. Being in a car was my best option. Our area of Dallas where US Highway 75 goes through, known as Central Expressway, is dangerous. If you travel it more than 30 times a year, the odds are that you will be involved in an accident yearly. It is a 70 mph limit with stop-go-stop-stop-GO!-STOP-go-stop traffic patterns.

If you hit someone in front of you, I'm sorry...You were following too close. Crappy traffic = Max attention. :(
Leaving lots of space between you and the guy in front also allows gentle braking to the guy behind you has time to react. Not cutting you any slack :( Takes two to tango.

I can't drive in major traffic......gets me real nervous.......I-95 through Philly is a mad house......zoom...zoom! In and out of lanes..crazy.

I seldom drove more than 5,000 miles a year in my life and since I retired, its down to 2,000 miles and it's all country roads. Our Jeeps are emission exempt. Mom may drive 1,000-1500 a year. My Jeep has 45,000 miles on it and it's a 2005...hers is a 2011 with 18,000 miles.

I see no need to go anywhere except the gunclub, hardware store or upstate to an occasional match. Cancers like to be at home. :D ---6

Hit from behind while at full stop. Even though I left room to move forward, the room had been taken by a typical pickup driver in Dallas who was trying to fit a 21 foot pickup into an 18 foot spot or cause a wreck to anyone who was where he wanted to be. The typical subhuman fecal encephalo in the pickup prevented me from avoiding getting hit. I have never seen any drivers anywhere else who drive as badly as the pickup drivers in Dallas. On Central Expressway, according to insurance statistic tables, you are probably going to have a wreck there once a year or more.

nice bike Blaine. what is it?

I'm planning to sell my R65 and get something like yours for the forest roads in WA and for Death Valley days, where I love to spend winter times.

my wish list is for a single cylinder AIR COOLED naturally aspirated with CARBS and magneto ignition. because I plan to get past walking distance from the van when trail riding.

I don't plan to do much asphalt riding, but I'd probably ride to the bridge and back for a quick plinking trip. I've been hit by cars twice already, 40 some years ago, when there were a quarter the number of cars on the road. I generally stay on secondaries and travel against the commute directions as much as possible. I've been rear ended twice in my van, so the odds aren't great. But riding the boony trails is...
