was there ever a lever action over 50cal?

Post by mickbr »

I recall reading about the the 70-150 Winchester but it seems it may never have been made. Also there are the shotgun gauge levers. I wondered if there were any actual rifled calibres over 50cal made, including modern custom projects?

old savage thanks I had heard of the 56-56 rimfire before but didn't realise it was in a lever action.

Pete44ru nice pics, I mentioned those in the OP.. I was more after dedicated rifle cartridges than the shotgun gauges.

I shouldn't ask these sort of questions because now I got the hankering to get a 50-95 again

Mick, don't overlook the Armi Sport Spencer replica in .56-50. I had one and it was a lot of fun to shoot. I used a modified Lee 515-450 mould to drop a bullet closer to 350 grains, and Starline makes excellent 56-50 brass. Use off-the-shelf .50-70 dies to load. A friend in Montana has taken a couple of whitetails with his. I'm sorry, but nothing in the lever line gets as many "style points" as a Spencer.

Winchester 1887 in 12 gauge, which would be a 73 caliber I guess.

Thanks Bill! I didn't know they were making them again, I will take a look! What sort of ballistics did you get from the 350 grain bullet?

Mick, I think I was in the low 900s with BP as the propellant, but never chronographed the carbine. Lots of great information here:

Thanks Bill that link is a amazing resource. I'm glad I asked here and found out about this calibre as it was not on my radar previously.

Mick, there's more. I had some left over .56-50 handloads after I sold the Spencer and thought, "hmmm, these seem to chamber OK in my 12mm Swedish rolling block." I'll be darned if they weren't incredibly accurate out of the Swede.
Talking these Swedes:

:) Well hopefully I didn't come off too controlling, I was just clarifying my question. I appreciated the gun porn Pete44ru posted, thats good material for future searches on lever action shotguns.

Aussies LOVE these new-fangled Turkish made lever-scatterguns especially since pump-guns were banned there. Here an Aussie guy popping pigs from on top his moving ATV using his lever-scattergun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wL4vma7dyKc Fast forward to 5:18 to get to levergun action. Anyone here know of a dealer who carries one of these Turkish lever-scatterguns?

"Aussies LOVE these new-fangled Turkish made lever-scatterguns especially since pump-guns were banned there."

< sigh > the sad thing is there are so many 'Americans' (at least they claim to be) who are willing to accept "background checks", which is a sneaky way to register guns, which is a sneaky way to set the stage for BANNING them, which will result in the same thing here in the U.S.... :|

Yes background checks is how it all starts. The sad thing as you said is when gunowners support gun checks but wouldn't expect them for buying knives, trucks, fast cars, liquor, boats or another 100 ways to cause deaths ...guns being more 'evil'..
