What shooter that you currently own are you taking?
Without a doubt, my early 70-ish Marlin .444 ( Second choice is the Win. AE 94 BB .375)

Both of my previous trips to TX for 86er's boar hunts I took my 1895 .450 Marlin that dropped those buggers like Thor's Hammer. The first trip I had also taken my Grandfather's 95 Winchester in .35WCF. That bullet smashed through both shoulders and tore up all kinds of stuff in between and she still got about 80 yds into the woods. Tough buggers. Either one of your rifles should do a number on one of those little piggys. :D

Honestly, with the fast-paced action I think I might take my 50 Beowulf AR.....

Hey, there's a few 'levers' on it; they just don't work the action.... :D

I'd have a tough time picking 1...
If I was still hunting then either my Ruger 44 carbine or my Henry 41. If I needed something for a bit more range, say from a box blind I'd use my 450 Bushmaster AR.
I shot a big hog years ago, 300 gr 44 broadside took the wind out of that boar real fast.
Heck any caliber will work just as long as it get into the pump station!

Whatever you take, just be sure that you are familiar enough with it that you can take a shot when the chance is offered and not hit the dogs at the same time. Those big pigs are quick and the dogs enjoy the hunt as much or more than you do.

Such hunting is a good place to try out new firearms or just shoot guns not used regularly.

Personally, I'd adjust the hardware to the animal that I intend to hunt. A meat hog might not need as much gun as a trophy-sized boar

Hogs are easy to kill with a well-placed shot. For meat pigs from a stand or cover, I prefer to shoot them at the base of the skull. That's low and just behind the ear on a live hog. Charles friend Sterling took a fine boar using a .30Win and a single shot to the head. Problem was that he wanted a skull and a 150gr SP damaged his trophy beyond recovery.

The big-bore hammers are helpful when a fellow doesn't get that perfect first shot. As with any animal they provide an opportunity slow the animal down or anchor it, which is useful with an animal that WILL run, or may turn to confront the hunter. I've found that I usually end up with one or two broadside or quartering shots on a running hog before it's sufficiently incapacitated, but that's me. I am not a Sniper grade marksman.

That's said, a larger caliber heavy bullet will certainly kill a tiny pig as well as it will a ginormous Hogzilla.

I mean... There is that old advisory about "Bring enough gun...".

Last pig I shot about three years ago was 150-160 pounds so not in the trophy class but I used my 444 with 300 grai handloads. Only move that pig made was straight down to the ground and the hole had about a sixteenth of an inch of bloodshot around it that’s all.

On my first pig hunt I took my heavy loaded 5" 45 RedHawk.
On my second I took a 4" 44 Mag.
Next time maybe I use my G20.

BrianSH,
Do remember the pig shoot at Hondo a few years back?
They had my son climbing the fence while you were shooting them off his feet! :D

Good pistol work, by the way.

Shooting a hog in a trap ain't hard, but it's harder than it looks... Just sayin'

Yes I remember. I put in a lot practice, as this was my first big game pistol hunt. I'm not counting jack rabbits on the prairie with my Gold Cup.
I was loaded up with plenty of self-doubt that whole weekend. Then it happened, and I thought that yeah I CAN do this.
I still haven't seen the vid of that shooting. I do not remember if my follow up shots were single or double action.

Please don't tell anyone of my insecurities, just our little secret. Besides, it might interfer with the reputation I'm trying to build as a "projectilist of distinction." :D

Yeah that is a REALLY good point. Whatever I decided to take I'd want to practice with it on making fast-shots at moving-targets.

With the interest in hunting the Boars Nest, I have scanned the old business card of the owner, Larry Paris, so that anyone interested in booking a hunt will have the proper telephone numbers:

If I were going that far for a hunt I'd take them both in case there's a malfunction. I would think the .444 would hit a little harder so that might well be my first choice.

Anybody ever read about Robert Ruark's pig hunt with The Old Man??
Funniest pig hunt ever, I'd imagine.
