Dogs -- "The Most Difficult Part..."
Amen to this.
It's still easy to shed a tear over our lab we lost in May... So many reminders in the house -- including her soft yellow hair, here and there...
Though not as much as before...............................

Re: Dogs -- "The Most Difficult Part..."
Almost 7 years ago when Winnie had her 1st litter we had a pup that was just not right. After a second opinion and X-ray it was determined the poor guy had a defective heart. Sadly I had to make a decision.
The vet was crying more than I was,( until I got in the car anyway). I told myself that a little kid in heaven asked for a puppy...
Darn it now I can't see the keyboard

Never stops hurting. They leave a hole that a new pup or pups only partially fill. I truly believe they are the living expression of God's love for us.

I miss Tia still.
I look at the picture I have of her with her first woodcock retrieved to a muzzle loader at nine months of age.
It's like it was yesterday!

Re: Dogs -- "The Most Difficult Part..."
None of my dogs have ever been a replacement for another dog. They are each unique. We recently adopted a shelter dog. He has some black mouth cur, some carolina dog, some hound, and some tail wagging fur covered energy. He is learning his name, and is fitting in well with the family. I still miss the half boxer half german shepherd that my son named whiskers when he was 4 years old. That dog was smart and knew what her mission in life was. She protected my son from everything and everyone except me and PillHer. We never trained her. She just knew what to do. She still has a place of honor. She gets to forever watch the back door of the house. I swear that there are some nights I can still see her if I look just right in the moonlight. We have had other dogs, and each one has been unique. Dogs are a gift from GOD.

Re: Dogs -- "The Most Difficult Part..."
Back in late August my sisters lab( one of my puppies) developed a lump on his right front leg. Vet said it was most likely cancer. Did the blood work, xrays- removed the lump and sent for biopsy. Sure enough it was a soft tissue sarcoma. He was doing pretty good then stopped putting weight on that foot, elbow swelled up.
More xrays and it had attacked the joint. Yesterday they removed the shoulder to try and stop the cancer.

All pet owners can relate.
Here on the farm, we have pet cats, dogs, chickens, ponies, & squirrels.(acorns and pecans).
Hard to keep up with them all.

At some point, the cure is worse than just letting the pet go in a humane fashion.GunnyMack wrote: ↑Wed Oct 17, 2018 1:37 pm Back in late August my sisters lab( one of my puppies) developed a lump on his right front leg. My Dixie is now 13, lost an eye to cancer, had to have multiple teeth pulled, emergency spay too. Is she happy? You bet!! Her tail is always in motion, always a smile on her face too!
My niece's dog has been home since last night, he already figured out how to get on the bed! He seems really happy to be home!

We still miss Copper. Heck, I miss my original dog from my childhood. They become part of our families... and our hearts.

Re: Dogs -- "The Most Difficult Part..."
You should get another pup. I promised my wife that she will always have a companion for when i'm not home. we are on are fourth one in 29 years. Sure, they will leave a hole in your heart when they pass, but, after a bit of mourning, you will be surprised how a new pup when fill it right back up, No two dogs are alike. The one we have now is going on 13 years, and shows signs of old age, but has been the best one so far, She has us trained perfectly I get the free dogs or pups from a pound, I refuse to buy puppy mill dogs that breed dogs for money.

Re: Dogs -- "The Most Difficult Part..."
Put my 16 year old dog down 2 years ago and haven't replaced him. He was the best dog ever, I will never find one better. Plenty of barn cats to keep me entertained. Kids are off to college so a little more mobile right now. Its nice not to have to cut things short so I have go home for the dog. Plus it wouldn't be fair to the dog if no one is around.
Re: Dogs -- "The Most Difficult Part..."
Ben, lots of folks find ways to bring the dog along. Do what you think is best for you and don't worry about it.
