.25-35

Post by JDL »

Has anyone bagged any game with the Hornady 110 grain FTX from their .25/35? Deer season is coming up and I'm getting antsy.

6pt., I had missed this news as well.
I am looking forward to working up loads for this amazing monomental bullet, a 90-grain FN from GSCustomusa.com. A friend used it on Texas whitetails and hogs and said it gave amazing performance and penetration in his .25-35. I have the "improved" .25-35 to work with -- Francis Sell's .25-35 Tomcat. Those are Hornady 117-grain RNs next to the GSC monos.

I have a TC Contender super 14 in 25-35; I wonder how these would perform in a slightly shorter barrel? :?:

I've never owned a 25-35 I did however own a very nice Marlin 1893 in 25-36 Marlin . That one was very fond of my homecast stuff especially the Lyman 257325 117 grain RN GC . It also liked an NEI bullet that was I think if memory seves 110 GC FN . Wish I had plunked a deer with it before I let it go . Not sure when it had spent it's life but I bought it from Wildwood guns in Maine . When I sold it it went to a guy in Texas same guy later bought the circa 1902 Marlin 1894 in 25-20 .

If I'm not mistaken the only jacketed bullet I tried in the 25-36 Marlin was the Hornady 117 RN . They shot well , I just like shooting my own cast stuff a bit more .

I also own an 1893 Marlin takedown in .25-36 Marlin. I don't use any jacketed bullets in it, and my cast load is around 118 grs. from an original Marlin-Ideal loading tool for the .25-36M. But it has plenty of power, and distance to take deer at distances well beyond normal hunting ranges.

I live about 30 miles from Wildwood guns. He has quite a pile of old guns there. He does mostly online sales but it's an open shop too. I stop in a couple times a year.

He has a LOT of old doubles. I don't know shotguns real well, but if there is something you'd like me to check out sometime, let me know.

I ran a packet through my 1894 a couple weeks back trying to sight it in. Haven’t shot a deer with it (struggled enough hitting the paper to be honest.)

I did however chronograph it. For anyone’s interest, from a 24” barrel I got:

2381fps
2368fps
2332fps.

I did quite a lot of business @ various New England funshows with the original owner, not so much with his Son (Craig).

I'd sell him a gun @ a 300% mark up (over my cost), and he'd mark it up at least another 100%-200%.

(EVERBODY got a bite of the apple, except for his retail customers)

A fun guy, too - until he had a heart attack & retired.

Yeah, Craig handles it now. His dad built it though. They used to have tons of adds in Gun List back before internet.
Thats why most business is online. Nobody around here can afford the prices. Including me. :D
I used to hit a lot of the shows up here back then. We probably rubbed shoulders.

I have shot everything from grizzly bears to antelope with a 25-35. I have never seen where the Hornady 117 grain round nose wasn't sufficient...

That certainly seems to do the damage! Your 1894 looks very similar to mine, I’ve got some of the 117gr Hornadys, just haven’t loaded them up yet. What is your recipe if you don’t mind sharing?

I load 24 grains of IMR 3031 and it works well.

This is the 25-35 I now have, it is a takedown rifle...

Impressive round the 25-35! I shot a doe back in 1990 or 1991 with mine using Remington 117 core lokt factory loads. They were old cartridges at the time by the way. The deer was quartering away from me at about 50 yds. The bullet wen from her left rump clean through and mushroomed under the skin of the right shoulder. Amazing!
So, you've shot game from antelope to grizzlies with the 25-35? That means you've shot other big game with it too! Please tell us more!

Well maybe I'll just stick with the 117 Hornady bullet, since shrapnel gives an outstanding review of it, and leave the rubber tips for something else. Shrapnel, at what distance do you recommend the 117 Hornady load?
