I've done 223 and 308 on my 550, for blasting ammo. However the LC 7.62 brass is VERY over size and I couldn't get enough leverage so I had to go back to the RCBS. LONG too, some of them were .040" long! Think I got about 2600 loaded out of 3000 .

Reload rifle on the 550 but I do not use it as a progressive for that. I just take each cartridge through the stages singly. No problem with accuracy, no problem getting an inch or better @ 100 with a wide variety of rifles including the 94s. Loaded about 12,000 rds over the years. I have loaded on a single stage but tedious by comparison.

I've never loaded rifle ammo on my 550. I use it for 45 auto, 38, and 357. Like above, I load an ammo can of 45, switch over to small primer, then load 38 and 357.
Try and do most of my volume pistol ammo in winter.
Everything else is loaded on my old Rockchucker.

Gunny, where ya getting a good deal on LCBC 308 brass? I am in the market. Most 308 military cases are oversized because they were used in machine guns with HUGE chambers.

Well, that's sure a good solution. However, I don't want to buy a whole other press.....and I really don't have room on my bench. I've gotten pretty good at the primer feed swap. Don't take but a couple minutes.

I have a fair amount of experience getting these sized down to chamber reliably in a Remington 7400 in .308. Needless to say but i sometimes questioned my desire to save "money" with all time and steps it took.

I don't remember, I picked them up before Odumbos 2nd term. I would like to say Widerners but... It was a mixed lot of LC,SBB and another. Majority was LC.

Like 3leg says do we really save anything with military brass!?!
Whole lot more case lube needed,
Sticking cases,
Piles of brass shavings,
Crimped primers....
Whew I'm tired just thinking about it!

I want the LC to run through my AR10 and M1a. I have piles of commercial 308 but a couple articles have mentioned the LC as thee brass for semi autos exactly because of the extra size and strength. I also have the primer pocket swage thingie and a good TV in my reloading room.a good JW movie and all the primer pockets will be swqged .

My trick was to use a 444 Marlin die to sixe the case head! It wirks just as well if nit better than the small base dies... plus i already had the 444 dies.

Thank you for that tip. I also have a 444 set. I was gonna have my buddy chuck my 309 die up and turn an eighth at a time off until the bevel was gone to make a small base die but this works too.

I also shaved a few off my shellholder but wasnt necessary with that die. Plus it leaves the neck and shoulder alone so adjust your 308 die to your chamber afterwards. A Lee 357 sizer works for 5.56 brass to do casehead and knockout primers also, saving your 223 due for normal use after.

I had 5000 5.56 that I reloaded, by the time I got to about 3500 the neck in the size die started to leave verticle scratches on the necks. I polished it but after a few hundred more the accumulated junk came back. I need to send it back to RCBS for a clean/ vapor blast or whatever they do.

You cheap bastard!!!!! 50 phucking dollars??????? And you think NOTHING of dumping THOUSANDS into old Marlins and Winchesters!!!!!!!!!

Let's start again....Hi Tom, ole buddy, ole pal....yes, I think $50 is a fair price to pay for 308 military brass. You will be well pleased as to its performance.....Ole pal.........don't concern yourself with machine gun brass....its not as if the machine gun chambers are the size of 45-70 chamber.....one pass in you FLS and then neck sizing afterwards will be more than ample enough for your needs.

Of course, the price you will eventually pay for your military 308 brass will never compare to the price I paid for a bucket load of 1996 Lake City MATCH brass that was shot out of tight chambered M1-A's and of course M-24 sniper rifles from the armies AMU that my other buddy Gunny used to have access to. By the way, little buddy, the primer pockets on MATCH brass are uncrimped.

I prefer military brass

Unless your long range benchrest shooting in extremely accurate rifles, go ahead and mix and match.......just keep military separate from commercial.-----your pal, the friend who has more guns for sale.----6 :D

When I first read Tom's post I saw LC and thought Long Colt brass( yes I know its just 45 COLT) . Then after reading Six's post it dawned on me it was Lake City!
For 50 bucks for 250 prepped ya should spend a hundred at least!! I think the 3000 I got cost me 150 and who knows how many hours of decapping, reaming, trimming before I could load it.

I believe my mentor and friend got my thought process wrong as I was thinking $50 for 250 processed brass beat the ever loving stuff out of anything else I had seen. As to buying more guns from ol 6. I haven’t finished paying myself back for the last two. You keep thinking about what ya want to sell me later ol buddy.

Ooooo.... oooo.....I'm so excited...Gunny? ....Tom? ....Old Savage?... Turtle man?....Old Win?....Griff?...did I forget anybody?....I GOT HIM!!!!
I got that stinking low life Indian goat phucker!!!! He calls the house offering a 40% savings on our electric bill and that's all I had to do was go to our computer and "check in".

My wife originally answered the call and she is a bit more evil than I am but willfully called downstairs to the dungeon for me....she hollows down, "hey tart, there's a guy who can give us a 40% savings on our electric bill." I hollared back, "OK tart Sr., I'll be right up!" So.....I took my time walking the eleven steps up and said, "yes sir, how can I help you?" He told me how he already explained it to my wife and for me to go to the computer.....so I told him, "yep, on my way". I asked him if he needed our credit card number.... (I don't even have a credit card). .....to which he said, "no, I just need you to go to your computer". Then......I started talking real low and he asked me to speak a little louder so I said, "OK" how is this?" Then I gave him 5 blasts from the air horn...as hard as I could push it!

(I take the phone out the front door to do this)

I blasted that camel phucker real good! :D ----6

Cuz the Dillon owners can run them fast enough to create enough heat to wear stuff out!
I've run just about every progressive ( gawd I HATE that word!) shotgun press out there. I found the Dillon best. They all have their pros and cons though. I can get an honest 600 rounds per hour. A normal bunker match I always load 500 rounds, what's not used is practice ammo next time.
Now I gotta get powder,primers &wads.

I load all my bolt cartridges on a 550 with Lee Collect dies. A friend who had many combinations and tested such things told me of all the combinations he tried that produced the least run out. 24,500 rds. half/half pistol/rifle - so far no parts needed.

You know I might be exaggerating, a few hundred might have been loaded on my Rockchucker.

Actually the part I needed wasnt actually NEEDED- if the charge bar was installed properly!!!!!
With Dillon they have 'wear' parts, designed to prevent the press from metal on metal and these are normally a nylon or plastic. They send em free. Heck I asked for 2 and they sent me 5. Ya cant beat the good folks at Dillon!

One of the advantages of loading rifle on the 550 as a series of sequential steps with a single cartridge going through is that you can easily load any number without changing anything 3 to 300.

Yea...not much going on...the handgun silhouette match got canceled due to range conditions and icy roads. The icy roads kept me from driving to the Leesport gun show.......I know, I can still go but I'm one of the guys waiting at the door before the others....

I have two five gallon buckets of .223 brass...one Remington, and the other Lake City....maybe I'll dive into them today and run out a thousand 55 grainers.....fmjbt.----dunno...may just watch Fox all day.....can't do nuttin' outside.....even the area of the yard that used to be high ground and hard will now suck your feet in 4"-----6

Back in my party days I'd take a day like this and knock out a fifth of Wild Turkey and a doobie or two.

I spent a couple hours plowing, then loaded the quad and plow on the trailer, loaded the girls and we went to the club. I built a fire in the stove, played fetch the girls a little then plowed the road into the property. Finally a few of the guys showed up so we put out 20 birds and went hunting.

Gotta go to Cabelas tomorrow, hope the next storm holds off till I get home!

I had my mustang GT up on a lift today, found out I need both front struts and lower control arms. I then came home put the plow on the four wheeler and fired up the snow blower. I then put all my office stuff in the super duty as surprise surprise, I have to work again tomorrow. Well, of course I do, it’s gonna snow. I have to go about two- two and a half hours each way and gotta be there by 0800. Probably be snowed out on Monday though as we are supposed to get 6-10 inches of snow and half way through it’s supposed to turn to wintery mix for a few hours then back to snow, well that ought to be fun.

Boy I have bad memories of changing ball joints on one of my trucks! Took 12 hours of labor, begging different shops to use their hydraulic press. Heat and pressure sure are a help.
Safe travels Tom!

Six you gotta learn not to push herself like that! Poor dog... Dogs have sensitive noses ya know!

Yes his abscense has slowed this thread a mite!

My BIL is a diesel mechanic and no matter what we tried those ball joints wouldn't move. Of course we were doing it on a weekend, after an all day Saturday attempt to get them apart we couldn't, trying to find a press to use on a Sunday was not easy!

Depending on the application I have had to use a c press on the vehicle and compared to a shop press, they will test your religion.

Ball joints with a c press vocabulary is intact. I was a house parent in a boys home for five years, truck driver for 11 years, and a NURSE for 15 years. Honestly a lot of the nurses would make the truck drivers blush. My c press vocabulary is so good I have literally been praying for intervention to control it.

Years ago I noticed car guys would have a reloading press in their garage and when they told me they did not shoot, I said, "well, what the phuck you doing with a reloading press?....now I know. In fact, I going to mount an extra Rock Chucker in the garage today instead of hammering on a vice with the vice partly open.

Just a reminder.....I found out years ago that EVERYONE is expendable and is easily replaced.....there's an old saying, "if ya can't take the heat, get the phuck outta the kitchen.........

Everyone has their own agenda as to why they "do this or do that" and its ALWAYS self serving...usually for the need of a large "audience"......I don't hide behind no "book".--6

Well I made it home before the snow started! I left this morning just after 8 for a 10 am interview with the gun department manager. He and I got along splendidly! Both of us bird hunters/ shotgun shooters. But I'm 65miles away and $11.00/ hour are deal breakers!!
His words were ' I'm very impressed with your knowledge ' we talked about Ackley cartridges, elk rifles, how to shoot ducks but 11 bucks just ain't gonna cut it, I'd be working just to fill the gas tank.
Oh well it was worth a shot.

Master Gunny....what Cabelas was it?

I "hear" home improvement stores like Home Depot pay new employees on what they know. You would think Cabelas would be the same......ya figure, how many people who apply there are real deal gunsmiths with formal training and a lifetime of concentrated shooting and hunting to go along with that training........if I was the manager, a guy like you or me would be worth $25-30 an hour....well, maybe $5 an hour extra for you as you have the gunsmith training.

I have a standing offer of $25 an hour to work at Targetmaster......caaaasssshhhhh......but the owner and me, while being near lifelong friends don't get along when in a work environment. (Oh come on Jack...pleeeeaaassseee.....you can make your own hours, come and go as you please) Nope!.....I've been pushed for over 60 years by parents, school, marriage, work, kids, etc and since I've been retired, with several checks coming in every month for doing nothing, I'M DONE HAVING ANYBODY TELL ME WHAT TO DO. :D

Maybe Gunny....just maybe, you are OVER QUALIFIED.....for real....a guy like you would get bored and leave and most assuredly, would quit n a second if the least thing rubbed your azz the wrong way......I would.----6

Hamburg.

For what they are paying I think you are right- I'm over qualified.

I kind of think after the novelty of working there I'd really miss the sun, wind in my face and then I'd be crabby all the time leading to my resignation.

Actually I was surprised I got a call since I'm so far away.
He has 2 part time and 1 full time open, said 7 more interviews to do.
