I've always had a weakness for Single Shots..

Post by 2ndovc »

Especially .22s and even more so for military training rifles. Saw this Zastava M56 Mauser style training rifle online a couple weeks ago and had to have one.
The first one arrived in multiple pieces and had to go back. The replacement got here the other day, fortunately in one piece but it was a mess. At some time while sitting in some Yugo inventory room someone wrapped the butt stock in some Warsaw Pact knock off Scotch Tape. I had to soak it several times over a couple of days to get it off. :D
Another nice surprise was an 8" piece of a plastic zip tie lodged in the bore. I didn't see it the first time I looked but it came out when I was cleaning the bore. That would have been nasty if I'd set it off without cleaning it first!

It's a nicely made, heavy rifle that functions perfectly. I went to the range this morning, but too many people out there and I had other things to do.
After a trip to the lumber yard I stuck a doubled up chunk of 2x8 on the wall and popped off a few rounds of CCI "Quiet" subsonic .22s, a little over 700 fps. Looks promising at 40'. Makes less noise than my nail gun.

Marked on the stock is: Serbian Shooting Sports Federation
Thought that was pretty cool.

I'll try the range again tomorrow. :D

I like it, zastavas are a bit of a rare bird. My brother has one, his stock looks like it was made from left over cold war barricades but its a good shooter.

Sure glad you looked down the bore, great reminder for all of us to check the bore before firing. I too have always had a weakness for single shots, hunted most of my life with my Ruger #1 and muzzleloaders, all I need now is a Martini Henry and a Sharps carbine and I'll never look longingly at another gun the rest of my day's.

One of my greatest joys is shooting single shot .22RF rifles. Lots of fun, and a great way to spend a day shooting.

That is a real fine looking single shot, should make a great rifle for big red fox squirrels. Around here old long barreled single shot .22 rifles are priced out of reach, at least for me.

Thanks Guys!

Well this thing can shoot!
Seems to like lighter and faster bullets, but there wasn't that much difference between the 36 gr and 40 gr high velocity rounds. Both shot under an inch at 25 yds. The CCI Quiet 22 had a slightly larger and shot a little lower, predictably. I shoot these in the back yard quite a bit. At 710 FPS it's really quiet out of a long barrel.

It's a keeper for sure. :D
Like Marlinman says, I can shoot a .22 single shot all day and be a very happy guy!

Just did a quick Gunbroker search for the 60A. Looks like the $ would be worth the investment. In decent shape they are worth a couple of bucks.

Jason, that's really promising. What's the trigger like? If rough, might be fixes to be found over at rimfirecentral dot com.

After Jason mentioned the 60A's were worth a few hundred at auction I placed a bid on the model 60 bolt!
Granted this one has been used it's in good shape so maybe I'll have a nice long barrel 22 for subsonic stuff.

Bill, the trigger is FANTASTIC!! Duplicates the military style two stage with a short take up and it breaks at three pounds, if that!

Gunny,

Hope the new bolt is a drop in fit. Often they're factory fitted for headspace, and wont usually just drop in and be correct. Be sure to check it once you have bolt and gun together.

Yes Marlinman I have already figured on having to check headspace. I'm hoping it'll be in spec but that is NOT how my luck runs!

That's cool!!

I've had a bunch of military .22 training rifles. The only one I've hung on to is an Enfield No.7 MKI made for the Royal Australian Air Force. That's one I'll never let go of. I have a Couple Martini conversions, but those were Club rifles after the fact.
