Woodscolts, strays.....
orphans and foundlings.....are always following me home....
the latest is a T/C patriot .45 pistol....
it had been shot without cleaning but a little mean green orange followed by goop hand cleaner, water, then 1/10 ballistol/water and it was not too bad....
that bassackwards set trigger and shrouded front sight takes some getting used to......
am thinking .440" and patch over a .45 acp case full of pyrodex p might work.....
any ideas ?

Re: Woodscolts, strays.....
Sounds like you have it figured out. Have fun!

Use GOEX instead of the other stuff and you'll be happier.

You may be correct....
I can usually tell after cleaning by a blow tube over the nipple whether on not a gun will be pyrodex or 777 friendly by the sound of the air and the amount of flow resistance....
This one is definitely real black only and will probably need a dose from the flintlock pan primer under the nipple for the first shot after cleaning....

.
Having owned/shot three of them (undamaged) over the years, and having seen more than a few others with cracked wrists from heavy loads, I would advise caution & "baby steps" when loading them.
Please don't guess at a starting load.
Here's the T/C Patriot Owners Manual, with loading instructions (use a stand to load the gun, but carefully, because the stock can be broken with enough downbore loading pressure), and recommended & maximum loads.

My .45 Patriots (there were .36's made too) liked just under 30gr (volume/dipped) FFg (Holy Black), but YMMV.
Pyro P will also work, but real BP is easier to ignite.

What Pete said..
I had a pair of them years ago. Both were scary accurate, but don't have a clue what I was loading them with anymore.
Have fun!

I was going to say that too -- but also be careful when loading it, as I saw one cracked while set in a loading stand one time when the owner really pounded on a ball to start it. I used to have one and loaded it while held in my hands, as that helped absorb some of the shock of loading, or at least I couldn't pound on it as easily.
Great shooters! But yes, be very careful with the wrist of it, and yeah, the bass-ackwards set triggers do take some getting used too.
Tight groups!

It would seem to me from my old black powder days that having to pound a ball down the barrel that you probably have a ball that is to big. Could be that the patch is to thick. Just an old man's thoughts.

Yes Sir.
I concur.
I seriously doubt that Boone or Crockett or Fink would have lived long enough to be famous with the tight load combinations folks use today.

Re: Woodscolts, strays.....
I have one in .45 caliber that I have used for rendezvous pistol shoots for the past 25 or 30 years. They are extremely reliable. The very first thing I did with mine was to remove both front and rear sights and install a small fixed rear sight dovetailed at the rear of the barrel and a simple blade front sight. I use 20 gr. of Goex FFFg, a .015" patch, and a .440 ball, which loads smoothly and without pounding. It is sighted dead on at 25 yards and I use a slight hold over as needed for farther shots. I never understood why Thompson/Center reversed the set triggers, but I have gotten use to them.

Yes, using the different DST's can be frustrating (to me).
Like everything else, when switching guns ( my long guns have been T/C's), I have reminded myself to wait/ponder the differences between both types of T/C DST's - mostly when switching to my Seneca for deer season here.

Re: Woodscolts, strays.....
When I started shooting black powder in 1967 my friend that made my rifle and pistol took me to a fabric store. We started looking at different cotton and linen material and he pull out a micrometer and said it needed to 15 thousand thick no more and no less. Sometimes we could find a material called Indian red which most of the men we shot with used.
