Barn raising, day 1,2 & 3

Post by 2ndovc »

After months of delays from the local building department, truss mfg and two framing crews that disappeared on us we finally got started on the new pole barn/ garage that I've been promising Blondie for about 12 years now. A good friend of mine hooked me up with an Amish crew and they worked their behinds off today in near 100 degree heat. Jonas and his boys are just fantastic! They will be back tomorrow, which is supposed to be over 20 degrees cooler and set trusses and start sheathing the roof and walls. I have another guy to shingle and I'll be doing the windows, doors and siding. Along with a breezeway that will connect the two.

Image

This thing was amazing. Did twenty plus 24"x 48" holes in less than two hours.
Image

They have a crane guy lined up for tomorrow. I hadn't thought of that. We used to do trusses this size and larger by hand, but Jonas and his boys are little guys and about five foot nothin'. :D I grew up with a bunch of Knuckle Draggers!

Image

Image

More pictures tomorrow. :D

Around here whenever a new horse barn is done it seems the Amish are hired, they KNOW how and have the work ethics to get it done.
However the crew always has 1 Mennonite on the crew and he never leaves the ground!

Pete, I hear ya. I've been in the construction world since I was a kid. Finding a sub contractor that you trust to show up when you really need them is the toughest part.

Interesting way of doing a pole barn. Around here we always do trusses after the posts have been setting in the concrete over a weekend. Then we'd start on the walls. Looks good though!

Day two got off to a late start due to some early thunderstorms, but the guys got a lot done today.

Trusses are up.
Image

Walls are sheeted and Tyveked.
Image

Bubbles is having fun watching the progress. Went out buying entry doors and exterior lighting today.
Image

There were only three of them here today and just kids. I don't think any of them were over 25, if that. So nice to see some young guys that have such great skills and work so hard at something other than video games!

Should have the attic space and roof decked tomorrow. :D

Ha! Those little buggers won't do anything for themselves. :D

The boys got an early start this morning. We're suppose to get several inches of rain over the weekend due to the leftovers of hurricane Gordon. It will be dried in by the end of the day, so no worries. I was concerned about all of the OSB sitting out there for so long with the weather we've had this summer but it looks like we only lost a couple of sheets.

Jason, this is just fantastic. It's a miracle how quickly this can happen when you have the right crew. Glad your building department "came around" for you. That's usually the most frustrating part. ARe you going to pour a slab inside? What a lovely neighborhood.
We have some Mennonites back in Oregon but no Amish. That said, the hardest workers I have seen by far are Hispanic/Mexican crews. These guys want to work 10-11-hour days, and will work through weekends and holidays if allowed. They work with good humor, and without complaint. They are hungry, and many have extended families here and back home that depend on their hard work and sweat. This may fly in the face of some stereotypes, but this is what I have seen with my own eyes on many occasions.

We had a couple of Mennonite communities out where I am from. They drive and use machinery, keep it simple, work hard, make good neighbors, and expect you to treat them fairly. The hispanics who worked at National Beef packing plant were hard workers. They were the sort who had families depending on them.
Back in the late 80s, a group of Hmong people were moved into town by the U.S. Government. They were given jobs at National Beef. What started it was never clear to me, but there was a lot of friction between the Hmong and the Hispanics. It escalated to gang type of fights on the weekends. Lots of knives and bicycle chains. I didn't hear about any motorcycle primer chains. Most of our Cops would arrest you on suspicion if they saw you wearing one as a belt. Upshot of it was that a couple of Hmong suffered serious accidents at work, and the U.S. Government moved them to Garden City and the IBPXL plant. Several people I knew worked at National Beef. If you worked hard and got along with the Hispanics, there was never any difficulty. The ones at National Beef worked hard and expected the same from you.

My Amish crew finished up around noon today. Gave the man in charge a fat envelope full of cash and off they went. :D

Now I get to do my part and tie the two together so the roofer can come next week. Then add the doors, windows and siding. It will take me awhile but that's the enjoyable part for me. I just can't do the heavy stuff anymore.
Image

Image

More than enough room!
Image

My new storage room, this is the best part. When I get the concrete floor in, I'll build a proper set of stairs in the corner behind my truck.
Image

My guy from the lumber yard figured out my supplies darned well. This is all that's left that isn't part of the breezeway.
Image

Very happy it went so well. It's straight, square and level. I wanted to do it myself but Bubbles was going to dis-own me if I tried.
The huge stress knot in my lower back is gone. Hopefully I can get some sleep tonight. :D

The rest of it will be a slow go as I get things done around my schedule. Weather still calling for some very heavy storms this weekend, so I'm gong to be busy with new ins. claims.

The Amish are the only ones I will hire.....as long as they do the type of work I need. They reroofed the house, new windows, doors, soffit, siding, gutters....plus we get about 95% of our meats from them. Plus, they built my barn also. Then I retired. :D

Jack, that's a beautiful barn! Mine will get there but I want to do some of it myself. " Because, I can" I think is a common phrase around here. I like the cupola, I might have to make one of those too. Did one years ago, turned out pretty good. Better yet, one that looks like Snoopy's dog house! :D

Thanks Jason....in the cupola I have a blue light on a timer that turns on when it gets dark. Lights up the whole cupola. Easy to see several hundred yards away. I have different colored bulbs and one time I put a red one in and the wife made me take it out. :D ----6

Thank's Rossi. I can't even walk in the barn without my wife telling me, "I better not see no nails pounded in or any of your junk hanging on the walls.....we used to have another barn that was a barn that was used for the real purpose of housing animals. I liked it but that's another story.

Just a suggestion for Jason before he finishes up the job. Look around before you buy regular expensive lumber to finish the inside.

Here in the Northeast.....and Jason's territory......we have a fair amount of independent sawmills......pretty much set up like Pitchy's..........most are powered by diesel engines taken from Kenworth's, Peterbuilts, etc. Anyway, they saw the logs that are indignant to the area and around here we have plenty of oak. Might be prohibitively expensive in the West unless your name is Trump.

We told the builders we wanted the bottom part of the barn.......excluding two 12x22 rooms......to be lined with rough cut oak.....16 x 8 x 1 and 1/2". It's fresh and wet when nstalled ....I saved about 30 boards.....can't even lift one board...have to drag it......anyway, it will take a class 5 hurricane to knock over this barn.

Image

We had the two 12x22 rooms done in knotty pile and insulated. Feels like air conditioning in those rooms in the summer.

Cement floor in the two rooms and packed quarry dust in the main area.

That's way too pretty for mine. Cars and trucks on the first floor and storage up above. I'll wire, insulate and panel it eventually but it will be awhile.
Didn't get much done today. We didn't get the wind and rain as promised but we got enough to turn that side of the yard into a great big sticky mess. I'll be framing out windows and doors for a few days while it dries out a bit. I'm also going to change one of the overhead door openings to a sixteen footer. It was supposed to be a wider door but the lumberyard didn't send out long enough headers. Thought we could live with the two narrow doors but it just isn't going to work well. Nothing that can't be fixed.
