Another vintage lever gun added to the fold (photo)

Post by KirkD »

Just got this in the mail today. A Marlin model 1889, chambered in 38 W (38-40) It was shipped from the Marlin factory in December of 1889. So it is a first year rifle. Full octagon barrel, still some colour case hardening on the lever. The bore is beautiful. I hope to get it to the range this week.

Beautiful! My 1889 also first year production is in 44-40. They are fun, and several years ago I used it on a Pa doe. Still mak s meat. Enjoy and please keep us posted on load development as I have a Frankengun with a 100 plus year old Marlin barrel on it in 38/40.

Nice one Kirk.
I have an 1889 in 38-40 also. Mine is a round barrel with a 2/3 magazine. It's an excellent shooter with the old Lyman 401043 and 8 to 9gr of Unique.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

Kirk, that’s nice. Great setting for the picture too. Todd

Beautiful rifle Kirk. Do have any history on it, has it always lived in Canada?

I thought shipping was slow around here! Did it get sent by Pony Express?

Thanks, all. I've had a few 38-40s in the past ('73 and '92 and an original Marlin 1894 SRC), and really wanted one to keep. If it performs at the range, which I am sure it will, given the beauty of a bore), then this one is the official keeper.

Always loved the 1889, as Marlin's first side eject model, and also the first design created for Marlin by LL Hepburn. The little catch on the back of the lever was always a nifty touch. That looks like a nice example.

Kirk, my wife said the quilt is beautiful like I said about the rifle. She wants to know if your wife did it. We have several that are over 100 years old and a bunch that she has made.

Jerry, my grandmother made that quilt for me about 48 years ago when I was finished high school and about to leave home to make my fortune. I used it for years until I got married, and then my wife's mother had a new quilt made for us by some local ladies.
