Bike ride to old logging camp

Post by Pitchy »

We rode the Harley 40 miles to this logging camp today, last time we were here was about 30 years ago.
At that time the TE was running the sawmill now it sits rotting away what a shame.
Not much to see anymore, nice big logging chain though.

I had a hunk of chain like that once, found it along the rail road tracks out in Model CO. That was a LONG drag back to the truck after shooting pasture poodles.
The links were 3/8 thick, each link about 6" long. Had to be 10 foot and over 200 lbs. Sadly it disappeared when I moved back .

That is a big chain. The old tractor is cool, too. Glad you had a chance to go get some bugs in your teeth. You remember that old joke about how to tell how happy a man on a motorcycle is. By the number of bugs in his teeth.

Yeah, but a friend of mine claims it really only proves that the rider can't afford a helmet with a full face shield!

So glad you got a ride in buddy. I'll bet we could make some lumber with that mill and power it with that Minneapolis if they'd give it to us and give us about a year. Not enough left of me to take on a project like that though. My 170 Allis broke it's injection pump a couple weeks ago so I took the pump to a Diesel shop in Tulsa. When I picked it up I gave them $1000 and got a 20 in change. Tried to start it a while ago and the solenoid stuck. Had to take the ground wire off to get it to stop cranking. Too tired to try anything more today but I'll put a new one on tomorrow and see if that helps. I'll start my shovel in honor of your ride tomorrow. Guess I could ride it into town to get the solenoid.

Bummer about the tractor Ron hope it works out ok.
Last time we were at that logging camp about 30 years ago they were only running 50 lbs pressure in her and water was running out the front of the smoke box so i`m sure it had leaky flues.
I knew the guy that ran it at the time and he was old then so he may have died also.

Did you stash the chain for a later "pick up"? There must be parts off of the sawmill you could use...after all, it's just rusting away.

I can see it now, Pitchy cruising down the road with a side car on the Harley loaded up with goodies, a rum and coke in hand and just beaming away with all of his teeth showing. :D -----6

Very interesting. Thanks for the pics.
