My Son Climbed all 48 "4,000 Footers" in NH

Post by Old No7 »

I am SO proud of my son...

Three years ago, he set a goal to "Climb all 48 4,000 Foot+ Mountains in NH before turning 30"

And he climbed #48 yesterday! One week before his 30th birthday!

He told me that to complete this task:
* He walked over 350 miles...
* He gained over 140,000 feet of elevation (just going up)
* He reached 48 summits on ~35 climbs (as some were two-fers!)
* And he lost over 30 pounds too

So we met him at the top to celebrate the completion of his quest:

He had also made up a special hiking shirt just for the occasion:

The views from the top of this 4,000 Footer were magnificent!

And of course we had to celebrate with a cold one!

But I'll admit my wife and I cheated -- this is how we got up and down!

Next up...

He plans to hike "The Terrifying 25" which are the most terrifying hiking trails in New Hampshire, and then he'll set his sights on the few 4,000+ Footers here in Maine.

Hey, at least I climbed up the stairs to the tram OK.................................

Sounds as if he had fun. Did he free climb, or did he use gear such as ropes and pitons? Just curious.

Now he needs to go to Colorado and take on the 50+ 14,000 footers  I climbed a whole three before I left the state. Too old for that stuff now so I just fly over them. Congrats to your son and WOW is that country beautiful; I never knew.

Hi there.

No ropes or pitons were needed, it was mostly hiking up, but several steep sections included ladders or climbing up hand-over-hand using rocks as hand & feet holds. He did climb a couple of the peaks a 2nd time in the late fall/early winter and had to use crampons and hiking sticks. The tallest peak he attained was Mount Washington with a height of 6,288 feet.

Washington still holds the record of "The second highest surface wind speed ever officially recorded above sea level in the Northern and Western Hemispheres of 372 km/h (231 mph) on 12 April 1934, using a heated anemometer". The highest recorded wind worldwide was 253 mph at Barrow Island, Australia in 1996 during Typhoon Olivia.

I have ascended Washington twice -- in my car both times  -- as they built an auto road to the top way back in 1861, which they race up on motorcycles and 4-wheelers (on a closed course, and you basically sign your life away as there are some really tight turns and steep drop offs near the top).

Cheers.

Tell him "congrats" for me.

This should be a good warm up for climbing the 14,000 footers in Colorado!

Tell him to start with Mt. Antero as there is a bulldozer trail to the top and there is good trout fishing back below timberline.
From the Antero peak, the view of the other 14's is fantastic too.

Congratulations!!! :D :D :D

Growing up in Indiana, in one of the flatest parts of what is generally a very flat state (northern 2/3rds of so), the concept of a state having 48 peaks above 4,000 ft just blows me away! :D
