Cool Find Last Week

Post by Pete44ru »

.

I bought this for the $2 price tag @ an "antique" store last week, because the shop owner didn't know what it was, other than the maker was Starrett.

It turned out to be a vintage L.S. Starrett (Athol, Mass) No. 711-G Last Word .001" dial indicator.(one inch dial diameter)

I know that the hole with the grub screw holds the indicator onto a rod-type support, and the clip on one end holds the test indicator contact ball - but not much else.

Hey! A Last Word. Man, I've used a pile of them, but not for a long time, now.
That word "Antique" really struck me.
We do most measuring with CMM's now. Manual measuring with a Fowler Trimos.
I need to retire.

Cool find, though.

Cool find. I have one just like it and an Alina brand that looks just like it. There are different dia contact balls available. I still use mine occasionally.

I have a finger indicator with a flexible mag base here at the house. Not a Starrett, but I don't use it much here. Have Starrett mics, calipers, and some other stuff, though. Their quality has stayed pretty good over the years.

Haven't seen one of those since dad and I overhauled a Lycoming aircraft engine before I went into the Army in 73.
