Who likes stainless?

Post by mickbr »

Not exactly what you call a traditional option, but I find I like them for practicality. Also I don't consider they look too bad either. For a regular modern model blued is still my preference but if a better deal comes along in stainless I am happy to buy it.

To me nothing is better looking than a nice deep blue finish with nice wood, but stainless steel and synthetic stocks certainly makes sense on firearms intended for use in harsh conditions.

I live in the desert so SS has never been important to me as far as resisting neglect/environment. I would like a nice 5.5" single action in SS with stag grips though, for some reason those look pretty slick to me.

Me too, but I really like the looks of my 1894SS in stainless/walnut. 8)

Have 3 guns in stainless, Rossi 92 in 45 colt, Ruger BH in 45 colt & my pocket gun is a S&W 642 in 38 spl.
blue is my choice but do like my stainless guns, that stainless just don't rub off like those pretty blued guns

Guns, yes.
Knives, no (they don't get or keep as good an edge).

Keep in mind that "stainless steel" isn't always the shiny nickel-played looking stuff....this here gun is stainless steel:

I have owned one stainless steel gun. It was a S&W model 13 3inch round butt, I really like the gun for a carry piece but when a friend made me an offer, he took it home. I was born in 1938, guns have always been blue steel and walnut!!!!!

If it was a 13 it was probably nickel

I have a 65, which is basically a stainless version of a 13.

I like stainless guns a lot. Only have one stainless levergun, though (about 3% :D )

My S&W M&P 2.0 is stainless with a black finish.

I like stainless after shooting a stainless barrel on my M-14 match rifle for a couple of years. The fact it corrodes slower from my touch than blue steel I have carried is a win also.

I find stainless to be practical. Composite stocks, too. While the older blued steel and walnut could be beautiful, the lower maintenance of the stainless is useful in my opinion. I go for stainless and composite when possible.

Pick one..............

Brace of Old Army's (Medium).jpg

I went with stainless in my Old Army just to make clean-up an easier chore.

But I have a mix of both finishes in other makes/models.

Blued and walnut are my favorite . However when I build a new bolt action I usually choose a stainless barrel .

I remember reading many years ago about a guy that bought a new rifle, had a SS barrel. He bought it for a polar bear hunt. When he finally got a chance to pull the trigger the barrel banana peeled from muzzle to forend tip. No it was not plugged it was just the wrong mix in very cold temperatures.
There are many different grades of stainless steel.
I own blues guns, a few stainless top. Do I have a preference? Not really an issue for me.

I've seen things they call blue that are down right ugly but there's nothing like a nice blue or case hardening.
The most beautiful blue I've ever seen was on a Weatherby rifle, WOW those Japanese make the more beautiful blue.

I prefer blued, but I'm old school and stainless does nothing for me. Also the term stainless used on firearms should really be called "stain resistant" as they are not made from high grade stainless. High grade stainless is non ferrous and a magnet wont stick to high grade stainless. If a gun was made from that quality of stainless steel the working surfaces would gall against each other on wear surfaces. So gun makers use a more ferrous stainless that a magnet will stick to. That grade of stainless works much better, but is also much less resistant to weather and salts. They will rust, just not as easily as blued steel.

All stainless is "stain resistant" The word is a combination of Stain & Less. Not corrosion proof.

There are quite a few types of stainless, just as there are several types of carbon steel. The properties are from the mixture of other elements in there as well as the heat treatment. Non-magnetic stainless such as Stellite is non-steel. If it has iron and carbon, it will be attracted to a magnet.

When I worked in the steel mill back in the 1970's there was scrap stainless steel sitting outside for a year sometimes in ugly Oregon rain, and it never rusted. Then lower grades of stainless they kept inside the covered scrap yard roof because it would rust in very short time.
The company I worked for did all sorts of large castings from nuclear power plant elbows, and pump housings, to earth moving buckets and parts. A huge variety of steel, but the nuclear power plant castings got the highest grade of stainless.

I generally prefer stainless for ease of cleanup and resistance to my flash-rust body type.

If done well, a full stainless gun can look like a really old gun "worn white" too.

Stainless steel is about as attractive as Michele Obama. Over the years I've probably owned a thousand guns and the only stainless guns I've owned equal the fingers on my left hand. I currently own a Smith 642 and one of the first Ruger blackhawks to leave the factory........mmmmm, got a Ruger Single Six, also a very early one.

I figure the only use for a stainless gun is for the guy who lives in the frontier and it's been 250 years since S.E. Pa has been that way.----6

If you live in a humid area stainless carry guns are hard to beat. They will still rust but not as bad as a blued gun and can easily be restored with a little buffing.

I have two stainless guns... both were for duty use. A mdl 65 S&W and a mdl 700 Remington. The Remington got a factory "black" finish to keep it in keeping with its intended use. I have one AR with a stainless barrel, I don't like the looks of the AR barrel, the mdl 65... but their function is flawless, so I overlook their shortcomings!
