Cabela's is doubling down

Post by jdad »

I was near the local Cabela's today so I stopped in. They had a revolver I wanted to finger and asked if they would remove the trigger lock.

Clerk: "WE CAN"T DO THAT"

Me: "Why"

Clerk: "Someone in Kansas came in to their library, picked up a pistol, loaded a round and suck started it."

Me: "We ain't Kansas."

Clerk: "All firearms get the lock put on when they enter the store, at the gun check in, and don't come off until they are brought to gun check in just before leaving the store."

Me: "So how do you know it's a functioning firearm, check the bore (on some firearms), etc?"

Clerk: "We don't know anything about the firearm until the purchaser leaves the store. If it has issues or is non functioning you can bring it back."

Me: " So a Bass Pro Shop attorney thought this was a solution to the problem like the TSA making you take your shoes off?"

Clerk: "You are correct and we don't like it anymore than you do. Hopefully if sales fall enough they will reverse this policy."

You just can't make this stuff up. :|

Another reason that I am ordering a rather expensive pistol from the neighborhood gun store rather than Cabelas.
I wonder how long it will be before they stop selling guns and go entirely to camping gear and clothes made in China?

I just wrote a post about my old shooting range. They just opened again after the
former owner died, now they are "no lead" only. No use to me what so ever, they
tried to defend it saying they had no choice. I had three guns with me, 22 mag,
357 mag, and 44 mag, they had no ammo for those three even if I had wanted to
buy their expensive ammo, which I didn't, I load myself. :x

Dunham's Sports is the same way, or at least the one here is. I asked to look at a handgun and was told that the triggerlock had to stay on. It was one of the newer striker fired designs and I certainly wasn't going to buy it without being able to feel the trigger pull. :(

Not a new thought. Shakespeare once said " First, kill the lawyers"
I once worked for Sports Authority and in 2000 they wanted us to record names and driver's license info on rim fire and handgun ammo ( remember those days). Gee wiz! Even the Yankee govt. gave up on that useless idea. Never underestimate corporate America...

I'd sure like to see Cabela's or any other retailer "take back" a firearm that has left the store.

So I loaded a cartridge in it and fired. How else am I supposed to know if it is a proper functioning handgun or not? It is not my fault Cabelas does not have a firing range in their store, so I improvised and adapted. 8)

Well, let's see... they've been doing that for a couple of years at the local Walmart, Academy, Cabela's, 2 of the 3 pawnshops I frequent, Sportsman's Warehouse...

Nothing new, here.

Reminds me of the joke. You wake up in a strange hotel room with Saddam hussien, a king cobra and a lawyer next to your bed. You have a revolver with only two bullets, what do you do? Shoot the lawyer twice, some things you can't be too careful about!

So a Bass Pro Shop attorney thought this was a solution...
Ah, yes, Bass Pro, a place I'd never buy a gun. At least at the local one the clerk took off the trigger guard the last time I asked, a few months ago. Then the guy proceeded to show me how easy it was to take down. He was still trying to figure out how to get it back together when I left. I never did get to try the trigger. I did notice, though, the parts were scratched. Then while he was fiddling, I looked closer at others behind the glass, and they were all scratched, too. A few weeks later I was in to buy a hat near closing time and heard a clattering near the guns. I looked over and saw the clerks literally tossing the handguns into trays on a cart. I asked what they were doing and was told it was policy to move them to a safe each night.

Seems Cabelas and Bass Pro have a death wish, and can't run themselves out of business fast enough! So they continue to add more stupid regulations to their gun area in hopes of hastening their demise.

Fortunately I have a local gun store that is owned and operated by veterans and the major owner is a retired machinist and gunsmith. I will never protest prices with them I will pay what they ask and never complain just to make sure they stay in business.

Rusty,
The gun store and range where I shoot is operated by nice folks AND they even give me a discount on guns they order for me.
They also have a gunsmith for simple stuff. It is only a 10 mile highway drive and much more pleasant than going into a city to a Bass Pro, Cabelas, or such.

No guys...it makes sense. Not everyone is as mentally balanced as we are here on Leverguns. :D

My buddy, who owns a very large gunshop tells his counter clerks that when a customer asks to look at a gun......no trigger locks mind you........that they, the clerk pay extreme caution/observation when they hand the gun to the customer to inspect. ALL of his employees carry loaded guns.........as he says to me, it ain't nothing for a weirdo/thief/oddball with a death wish to pop the mag out of a gunshop owned Glock 19 (or any gun) and quickly insert his (bad guy) loaded Glock magazine into the gun and do bad things.

The bad guy may have found a loaded mag and just needs the gun to complete his "task". Sure, there are other ways the bad guy can do things but it's good to eliminate some of the common sense things that a desperate nutcase might think of.-----6

It seems like many guns have a reasonably simple way to render them inactive and still allow a trigger-pull.

For many guns, removing the firing pin would be fairly easy. For others, chamber-blocking locks exist.

Of course the places I shop price low enough that the profit margin doesn't justify much extra expense; instead the owners just 'hover' over the customer, with an intensity inversely proportional to how well they know the customer, with a 'potential gang-banger or nutcase' factor added in.
