I believe there are a few down south, Georgia comes to mind. I think it was an attempt to curb the criminal behavior flowing out of Atlanta.

If you take a close look at the OP's question, you will see he asked about (US) counties, and not countries - Switzerland is a country which has long had mandatory national civilian gun ownership (I think Switzerland has issued military rifles to civilians).
AFAIK, there are no US counties with mandatory gun ownership, because (AFAIK) US counties don't enact laws, but municipalities (cities, town, districts, etc) can and have done so.
AFAIK, the US municipalities that have done so are:
Kennesaw, GA (Marietta County)
Nelson, GA (Pickens and Cherokee County)
Nucla, Co (Montrose County)
Gun Barrel City, TX (Henderson County)
Virgin, Utah (Washington County)

kennesaw is in cobb county with marietta the county seat.....
1982 [Sec 34-21]:[21]
(a) In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.
(b) Exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who suffer a physical or mental disability which would prohibit them from using such a firearm. Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony.
the 2013 nelson law is almost a copy of the kennesaw law.....

Re: gun ownership mandatory?
As far as I know, there are no US counties that have passed such an ordinance -- although a county certainly could -- but as noted there are a few municipalities around that have. As far as I know, none actually enforce the ordinance. It's there more as a statement, usually translated as "criminals stay away, no helpless victims here".
As far as Switzerland goes, they do not have a law mandating gun ownership. What they do have is universal military service, followed by mandatory reserve service well in to middle age, and a requirement that every reserve member keep his or her issue weapon and ammo at home.

Pete, I don't know about where you live, but the County I live in sure as heck has laws, ordinance or whatever you want to call them.Pete44ru wrote: ↑Thu Aug 02, 2018 9:12 amIf you take a close look at the OP's question, you will see he asked about (US) counties, and not countries - Switzerland is a country which has long had mandatory national civilian gun ownership (I think Switzerland Switzerland has issued military rifles to civilians).

Re: gun ownership mandatory?
some years ago I read somewhere that such an ordinance was passed by a county somewhere in what you guys call the "bible belt". Don't know if that was real or fake news.
